Haynes should be the clubs first priority.

Ok. Nick Haynes is gone. So now what?

Going by team needs;

#1 Priority - Key Defender.
1st Target: Adam Tomlinson (193cm, 25yo)
2nd Target: David Astbury (195cm, 27yo)

Our main priority is finding a key defender. We'll see how Roughead goes and watch Kelly and IQ develop. But I think we still need to find a quality tall back there.

Tomlinson and Astbury are the best ones left in the FA pool.

#2 Priority - Key Forward.
1st Target: Sam Weideman (196cm, 21 yo) (wont happen)
2nd Target: Hugh Greenwood (190cm, 26 yo)

This will be a difficult task. But until Weid has signed, we have to ask the question. Greenwood not a natural FF and he's injured again, so I really should take him off this list. It's just there isnt another option atm.

I still dont think Weid will become a Pie as we'd have to trade with Melb and we'd have to convince him that he belongs here.

#3 Priority - Best Available.
1st Target: Stephen Coniglio

Gap

2nd Target: Ed Langdon

Gap

3rd Target: Jack Newnes

AKA, midfielders. With Wells and others on the way out, we might just be able to snag someone. Will also need to look to the future with Pendles over 30 now. Coniglio and Newnes are free agents, Langdon would be an easier trade target. Josh Kelly would be too difficult a trade, otherwise he'd be #1. We're out of the race for him.

#4 Priority - Back Up Ruck.
Stefan Martin (32), Matthew Kreuzer (29), Todd Goldstein (30), Paddy Ryder (30), Callum Sinclair (29) are all approaching that age. If one were to be let go by his club, we could offer a ruck/coaching role whilst in the window. However, I don't think we'd be too willing to pay big money here, but I think its something we need to address.

Dont really fit:
Aaron Francis/Jade Gresham/Lachie Hunter

All good players, but either too short (we have plenty) or too difficult to trade for. And dont fill any urgent needs.

Overall:
One of Tomlinson/Astbury should become the clubs new #1 target. After that a quality tall forward, as unlikely as that will be. Then the "best available" in Coniglio.

If we fail to land any of those then we might need to go back to the drawing board, but shouldn't write off the remaining players.

I think a backup ruck could be a good idea, but it'd have to be someone willing to play a lot of VFL and almost take on a coaching role. Finding that ruck shouldn't be a huge priority, but it needs to be looked at.

We are in the window, so attracting players shouldn't be the worry. Finding the salary space may be the issue. We also lack the draft selections to go after any superstar quality players via trade (Kelly), but may be able to snare a Langdon type.

According to Jon Ralph, the top 12 free agents are:

1. Jamie Elliott
We all know his story. Signing a 1 year deal. We'll see what happens, but if his AFL career continues, you'd think it's with us.

2. Stephen Hill
Hurt again and almost 29.

3. Stephen Coniglio
Surly he is the real #1. GWS think he and Kelly will remain at the club. Personally, would love to see Wells hand him the #3 jersey at seasons end.

4. Adam Tomlinson
Should be a target for us. GWS have a bit of work to do.

5. Sam Day
Interesting. 197 cm KPP. 27 at seasons end and coming back from a serious hip injury. Has also had shoulder problems. Might be worth keeping an eye on.

6. Todd Goldstein
About to turn 31. But we do need to think about backing up Grundy.

7. Brandon Ellis
Doesn't fill an urgent need for us. But he is young enough.

8. Shane Edwards
30 and wont produce another AA season.

9. David Astbury
Fills a need for the club. Of high interest.

10. Nic Naitanui
His knees are just about shot. WCE will be more than happy to keep him around anyway.

11. Brad Sheppard
Cant see him moving on.

12. Tom Liberatore
Essendon had a sniff, will they again? 27 this year. I'd be interested if he didnt ask for huge dollars.

Dont really agree with Ralphs ordering. But there it is.

Elliott as number 1 free agent? Laughing

No club's going to target someone who hasn't played for two years over Coniglio who played 23 games in 2018 and averaged 28 disposals. Not even a good 2019 would launch Elliott to the top spot.

A weak year for free agency. Top two for us would be Coniglio and Day (assuming he's injury free).

Edit: Elliot's only missed one year, seems longer, he played 17 games in 2017 but did miss all of 2016. Point still stands.

Would be the best player currently available. I know we need to address our KPPS (Astbury/Day/Tomlinson), but imaging him in the #3?

He is from W.A. So WCE/Freo might make a better fit for him. But he has also stated he is happy in Sydney. But please get him Pies!

Watch the 2010 WAFL GF, Krakoeur (rightly so) wins the Simpson Medal, but if it wasn't for a teenage Coniglio, he never would have.

The kid will win a brownlow & a norm smith.

And if you haven't seen it... the 2010 victory by the Mighty Swannys was insane!

How drunk do you reckon the Skidsta was in 2010, the week after that, I was in Melbourne for the drawn GF.

A few days ago Jon Ralph rated all 61 free agents, but I'm not paying to read it on the HS website.

There's been word out there that the Saints are trying for Coniglio, offering up to $1.5 mil a year. If thats true, it puts us out of contention for him. We will have some room to move once Wells contract is over, but I think we'd be looking to stock our tall options first. That and I believe Coniglio will stay at GWS anyway.

I think Tomlinson will become our main target. Day is still one to watch, but he hasnt featured in the opening two rounds. We might pass on Astbury.

I still think Ed Langdon is a realistic trade target. As is Jake Kelly. Jack Newnes has had a good start to the year, I wouldnt say is a big name, but may be one to watch as a FA.

As the season goes on, we'll see more players sign on with their current clubs. And that includes Elliot. All eyes are on GWS.
