I'd agree, I think (though beating the Bulldogs is maybe not to be brushed off too lightly, given their last two weeks?). It's really only our first half of the season that's keeping us up there for me.

Are we the best team on the road??????
I reckon we are.
Maybe someone should do the stats.

I reckon the main competition for the title would be an interstate team, but if you include their entire history that could drag them right down. (It takes time to learn how to win in Vic.)

Total: 69–71

That’s pretty good, I think? Only our bad WA record keeps us from being on the positive side of the ledger. Would be interesting to see if any other team has managed it.

Edit: Here are other sides away from their home state (just wins vs losses):

Adelaide 129–182
Brisbane 102–248
Carlton 54–99
Essendon 57–94
Fitzroy 14–34
Fremantle 73–179
Geelong 76–79
Gold Coast 15–77
GWS 25–53
Hawthorn 114–92*
Melbourne 53–115
North Melbourne 101–105
Port Adelaide 99–136
Richmond 61–105
St Kilda 53–120
Sydney 900–1070**
West Coast 155–205
Western Bulldogs 55–103

So we’re second behind Hawthorn, just edging ahead of Geelong and North Melbourne (whose surprisingly strong record may be explained by their various home-away-from-home ventures over the years).

*Includes home games in Tasmania, where they have a 48–13 record.
**Includes all games played outside of New South Wales, which obviously doesn’t make sense given they were based in Melbourne until 1982. So take this with a grain of salt; it’ll take someone with a lot more time on their hands to work out what their post-1982 win-loss rate outside of Sydney is.

We’re 21–18 away from Victoria under Buckley.

Oh, you can't include Tasmanian games, unless they're playing against Tasmania. (Remember when Doug Barwick kicked that goal for Tasmania that bounced over the defender's head?)

48-13?? Shocked Then their real interstate away record is much worse than ours. We are the greatest after all. Cool

CD has their Road-Trip Ladder. Do they have it in for the Pies or are they just retarded? (I assume it is their ladder, and Cal Twomey, the afl.com.au journo, just reported exactly what they gave him.) They've made many silly choices to get this ladder.

CD's Road-Trip Ladder -- past 20 interstate games:

1. WC 13-7
2. Melbourne 12-8
3. Collingwood 12-8
4. Sydney 12-8
5. Geelong 11-1-8
6. NM 11-9
7. Hawthorn 11-9
8. Port 10-10
9. Adelaide 9-11
10. GWS 8-1-11
11. Richmond 8-12
12. WB 7-13
13. Essendon 7-13
14. Brisbane 6-14
15. StK 4-16
16. Carlton 4-16
17. Fremantle 4-16
18. GC 3-17

^ surely the interstate teams need to be judged over the same time period as the vic teams. I mean, the last 20 trips for the eagles have all come in the past 2 years - when they've been the best performing interstate side during that period. And Hawthorn/North's home Tasmanian games don't count (nor should Melbourne's home games sold to the outback).

Indeed TB. If they were rebuilding over the last two it would also misrepresent them.

How many Alice Springs games have Melbourne played in total, and has it always been different opponents? If it has, they should almost count as home games. Even if it hasn't, they should not count for this road-trip ladder.

The China games shouldn't have been included either.

Hawthorn's Tassie games were not counted (and rightly so).

A bit of perspective folks. We lost by less than a goal to the Hawks, who just beat the Cats and are playing for their finals chances. We beat the Eagles on their home turf, and despite being smashed from pillar to post in the first quarter, we matched it for 3 quarters with the Giants. This is not a team playing shit football.

Sure, we are not playing anywhere near our best, but this should be seen as a positive. It says we can improve massively between now and September.

Not much to disagree with there, sadly. Stephenson is a star, and Brown is steadily establishing himself in the side. Quaynor will be good. The rest is, unfortunately, at best unknown. Compare that with Carlton:

Quote:
Jacob Weitering (73 games), Sam Petrevski-Seton (60 games), Charlie Curnow (58 games), Jack Silvagni (56 games), Zac Fisher (51 games), Caleb Marchbank (48 games), Matthew Kennedy (38 games), Paddy Dow (37 games), Harry McKay (31 games), Lochie O'Brien (31 games), David Cuningham (24 games), Sam Walsh (18 games), Tom Williamson (17 games), Cam Polson (16 games), Will Setterfield (16 games), Harrison Macreadie (nine games), Liam Stocker (five games), Pat Kerr (four games), Tom De Koning (two games), Matt Cottrell, Finbar O'Dwyer, Matt Owies, Kym LeBois, Angus Schumacher, Ben Silvagni

I obviously don't know their list as well, but I do know that Curnow, Weitering, Silvagni, Petrevski-Seton, Kennedy, McKay, Walsh and Setterfield are all very good or at least promising players. True, they're rebuilding and we aren't, but things do look bleak if our latest crop doesn't come through.

We may have sold the farm in our trades for older players. We needed to win last year's GF.

^ True that it turned out to be a huge missed opportunity, but then it's not like anyone particularly expected us to win last year (or necessarily even play finals). So there was no reason for recruiters to think it was an all or nothing effort.

Well, they may have been tempted by last year's near miss to load up this year to try to "tip us over the top". Foolish if we don't win this year.

No one should assume making the GF is a good achievement. At the end of this year, there may have been 8 different grand finalists in the last 4 GFs. Of course if you win it, it doesn't matter if you were just lucky. You don't have to give back lottery winnings just because someone noticed it's pure luck.
