Neither was David Cloke.
Geoff Raines was ok too.
Dougy Barwick was mighty fine.
Gary Pert contributed for a while.
Shane Morwood was a good pickup.
Its not all bad. | Morwood was the low profile young brother. Not a big name recruit. That is exactly the type we should chase. The big names teammates of his like Smith and Hawke did SFA for us. Raines was an unmitigated disaster. He is exactly the type of headline signing that killed us. He came for a fortune and when he didn't produce more than ok performances and we went all but belly up he walked after we tried to cut his salary. He is one of the money chasers that we brought into the club that pulled apart the fabric of a big hearted fighting side. The names were not Collingwood names they were opposition money chasers. I still recall Tony Shaw commenting that Mitchell came to Collingwood and parked his new car under the Sherrin Stand “which he probably now owns”.
There is a huge difference between what Geoff Raines and David Cloke did for our club. Cloke was a man who played for his jumper. Raines was a man who was paid for his jumper. Cloke came for big money too but the difference was he worked to ensure it was justified. He is the exception to the rule for us from that era though. Not the only one, but certainly one of the minority.
Barwick was good and helped us win a flag. Unquestionably a success. Pert was good too but in the end got us nowhere. Since the 70’s we have chased and got the names. It is as much why we didn’t win premierships as anything. It is actually where IMO we stopped being the Collingwood that did win premierships. Firstly, post 1958, we refused to accept that we had to use money. Then when we realized the world had changed we went off and tried to Carltonise Collingwood and it didn’t work. It wasn’t us. Not only that, it nearly sent us to the wall. Now times have changed and money really does rule football. Footballers till make football club successful though. Not their names, their deeds on the park.
I am not saying we shouldn't trade or even get big names but we must be discerning about who we take and in the end we have to operate in the current trade/draft environment so we have to avoid overpaying at the trade table. |
