Haddin steps up for Gilchrist

Brad Haddin will replace Adam Gilchrist for Australia's next two VB Series games after the tournament hosts chose to rest their first-choice keeper.

Is NSW really Australia A in disguise? I thought Hussey (WA version) or Maher were the crown prince's of gloves.

JLC must have slept in or he's still recovering from the shock of logging on this morning to realise he actually named Bevan in his preferred ODI side.

The Haddin selection surprises me. Not because he's a NSW player but there are at least 3 with better credentials.

He wouldn't be my first pick but Jimmy Maher is as good a keeper and a better opening option.

Wade Seccombe is an excellent keeper and is in sparkling form with the bat.

What's Ryan Campbell done to fall out of favour ? Better keeper and batsman than Haddin.

As Australia has been (Maher) and is prepared to go in with a batsman who can keep, why not use Justin Langer ? We keep hearing he can keep and he's certainly in form in the one dayers. He's twice the batsman of the 3 I've mentioned - a recent 79 ball century and 9 hundreds and 41 fifties for W.A. in one dayers - and who better to open with Hayden ?

Bevan is on a big slippery side........how silly does the tendulkar v bevan debate look now ?? Where is Special Delivery sticking up for his man ??

Maybe Langer is the man to wicket keep?? I mean he has been the back up keeper on a few tours. He likes batting with Hayden and vice versa and he has been in great one day form this summer.

You could even have this as a team

Hayden
Langer
Ponting
Clarke
Katich
Symonds
Moss
Harvey
Lee
Gillespie
Williams

The Sach v. Bevo debate hasn't changed at all.

Bevan has won far more games for his team than Tendulkar. Of his 36 centuries, India has only won 9 of those games.

Ooops, I meant to say Campbell from WA, not Hussey...who was keeper for Aus A this season, was it Haddin?

Donny,

Agree with you in a bid way over Haddin. He CAN bat but his keeping is very sub-standard; of the ancient mariner variety (he stoppeth one in three).

I'm not enthused about Maher keeping but is a superior bat and at least on par with the gloves. Methinks Maher is on the outer re age and generational change.

Seccombe is the best of the keepers going around but is 32-33. Shame, he'd still walk into nearly every Test team going around.

Campbell would have had my vote. His keeping has developed to be amongst the best 3-4 in the country and could play as specialist bat.

Langer with the gloves is a stop-gap measure. His intl future is limited due to age so a one-day ressurection is unlikely.

Wombat, this thread is just about Gilly being covered for a couple of games so it doesn't really matter how old his replacement is.

However, if we were looking further into the future, Sean Clingeleffer is the one who's impressing. Hasn't put a foot (glove) wrong behind the stumps and is a more than competent batsman.

He'd probably come more into the frame as a Test keeper though as they'll probably keep using the Haddin/Campbell types in the ODIs.

Punko, this is not a 'Bevan v. Tendulkar' thread. It's about Haddin being selected to replace Gilly for two matches in the VB series.

It's one of JLCs pet subjects. He brought it up and I replied, once.

Ah yes, Donny, I'd go a long way along with you but for the fact that Gilchrist is showing signs of considerable wear and tear.

Therefore I contend that if Gilly is to last further than another 1-2 seasons, he'll be needing increasing time-outs during LOI series or even Tests against the lower B division teams.

Haven't seen great amounts of Clingeleffer, has looked highly competent in both fields from what little I have seen. Wouldn't care to make any real pronouncements on his true merits on such evidence.

Haddin is IMHO the least efficient of the regular first class keepers in Australia. Any promotion of him to any intl representation is an insult to all self respecting keepers in this country, past and present.

JLC's side?? Langer as keeper. Preferable to Haddin but hopefully only as a stopgap. Beven ??? Getting sentimental are we JLC, and to a NSW player ??

Carrying non-performers is one of yr hobby-horses so it is curious that the great hairdo aka Harvey has escaped yr ire or are there separate rules for Vics ??

Moss ??? The day he gets an intl cap is the day they should pack up and give up. He's barely state standard and would have struggled to make most other state squads. TO his credit he has had a productive season, well done but intl level is a quantum leap too far form him.

Langer scored one of the quickest one day hundreds only last week. Langer has a tremendous relationship with Hayden as they both seem to click.

Non Performers = Martyn and i dropped him.

Harvey has a role to play in the team. IDEALLY the other bowlers could take some EARLY wickets and Harvey can clean up the tail, instead of the team being 2 or 3wickets down and scoring at 6 an over. The horse has kind of bolted.

Can someone please compare Shane Watson and Moss in terms of performances.
