Molik wins - Fox

Alicia Molik overcame a first-set setback to become the only Australian woman to advance to the fourth round of the Australian Open today.

Molik saw off stiff resistance from Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg to win 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 6-3.

Only once before has Molik been past the first round in the Australian championships – in 2000 when she reached the third round.

She was forced to pull out last year with an ankle injury.

Last year she finished the season ranked 35 in the world.

Molik became the lone Australian woman still in the draw after Queenslander Nicole Pratt exited the tournament earlier today.

Williams in tears

By Mike Hedge - Fox

DOUBLES specialist Lisa Raymond caused the biggest upset of the Australian Open yesterday, sending No3 seed Venus Williams crashing out in the third round in straight sets.

Having overcome a stomach muscle injury, Williams was playing her first tournament since losing the Wimbledon final to younger sister Serena in July.

Such is her self-confidence, Williams came into the Open with high hopes of winning her fifth grand slam title despite the long absence.

But in Raymond, she came up against a player at the peak of her form and lost 6-4 7-6 (7-5).

"I'm pretty much in shock, I still can't believe it," a tearful Williams admitted afterwards.

"But that's the way I feel after every loss - whether I've been off or on or what have you."

Williams was also quick to pay credit to Raymond, who has won 42 career doubles titles and is playing with Martina Navratilova.

"Even from the warm-up I was thinking 'she's going to play well today' just from the way she's hitting," Williams said. "She played good, she had a lot of shots rocking and rolling today."

In 44 previous attempts, the 30-year-old Raymond had only advanced to one grand slam quarter-final, when she was beaten by Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2000.

But with a fourth-round encounter against French wild-card Tatiana Golovin next on the agenda, she has every chance of reaching the last eight at a grand slam for the second time.

"I couldn't ask much more of myself today," said Raymond, the No25 seed. "To go out there against a top player and start off well and to finish well. To maintain a high level of play like I did today is great.

"I knew I was going to have to play well to beat her. I wasn't going to be able to sit back and wait for her to make mistakes."

For obvious reasons, Belgian No2 seed Kim Clijsters didn't skip with glee to the women's lock

er room after she cruised through her third-round match.

The taped left ankle isn't up to dancing just yet and Clijsters can't afford to shift the focus any further than tomorrow's fourth-round assignment after Williams' demise opened up her half of the draw.

Clijsters didn't have to over-exert herself as she smashed young Russian Dinara Safina 6-2 6-1.

Another Russian, Anastasia Myskina, the sixth seed, is the highest ranked player standing in her way.

The powerful Belgian has dropped only eight games in three matches.

"It doesn't matter if you're playing a person ranked in the top 10 or someone ranked in the top 200 or something. Just take every match and every tournament as serious as possible," Clijsters said.

Clijsters welcomed the third consecutive match of less than an hour's duration as she is aware tomorrow's opponent Silvia Farina Elia of Italy will make her work hard in the rallies.

Farina Elia underlined that terrier retrieving tenacity to outlast American Amy Frazier 4-6 6-1 7-5 in 2hrs28 min after Frazier served for the match at 5-4 in the deciding set.

Hewitt sets up rematch

By Leo Schink - Fox

LLEYTON Hewitt last night surged into a dream Australian Open fourth-round clash with Roger Federer as Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal formally emerged as a grand slam champion in waiting.

Hewitt, 22, shaded Nadal 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in a gripping contest of towering quality and tension to reach the round of 16 and a confrontation with fellow Wimbledon winner Federer tomorrow.

Last September Hewitt scored the finest of his seven victories in nine matches against Federer in an epic Davis Cup semi-final, after the Australian had trailed by two sets to love, to shunt John Fitzgerald's team into a final it won eight weeks ago.

Victory against Federer would propel former world No. 1 Hewitt into the quarter-finals against either eighth seed David Nalbandian or unseeded Guillermo Canas, both of Argentina.

If Hewitt and compatriot Mark Philippoussis maintain their admirable Melbourne Park progress, the duo could meet in the semi-finals.

For the moment, Hewitt is elated at overcoming 41st-ranked Nadal, 17, who was earmarked two years ago by French Open winner Carlos Moya as likely to become the youngest world No. 1 in history.

"(He's) a helluva player," Hewitt said of Nadal.

"To come out there in his first match on Rod Laver Arena, I was expecting a tough match – it was a lot tougher than I expected.

"I had to raise the level of my game to get through.

"I'm feeling good. I love playing in this arena. I love this crowd, I love the Fanatics.

"It's just great to win."

Hewitt had to perform at his tenacious best to subdue Nadal's glorious groundstrokes.

Hewitt has beaten Federer in seven of nine matches, including the past three in a row. But, oddly, the classy pair has never met in grand slam competition.

Significantly, perhaps, Hewitt has not lowered his colours to the brilliant Swiss artist in best-of-five set encounters.

"It's going to be a tough match," Hewitt said. "I've got to get off to a better start than last time.

"Roger is a great player on any surface, in any arena. I've got to play my best tennis."

Federer advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Sydney teenager Todd Reid yesterday.

Molik out of Open - Fox

ALICIA Molik became the last Australian woman to bow out of the Australian Open singles today, losing 7-5 7-5 in the fourth round to No.4 seed Amelie Mauresmo.

Molik was up a break in both sets, but the Frenchwoman played the bigger points better.

"It was a very tough match, she obviously gave me a lot of trouble especially on the serve," said Mauresmo, who missed last year's Open through injury.

"I just really wanted to go through this one and through to the quarters."

No Australian woman has advance to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open since Anne Minter in 1988.

The most recent Australian to make the last eight at any grand slam tournament was Jelena Dokic at Wimbledon four years ago, before she switched her allegiance back to Serbia.

So now who do you all want to win?

From the start I wanted it to be the Poo, Agassi or the A-Rod. So it looks like I'm going for Andre now.

Ferrero fights off Arazi

Fox

SPAIN'S world number three Juan Carlos Ferrero emerged from a three-set dogfight with Moroccan Hicham Arazi to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The French Open champion needed two tie-break sets to put away the 51-ranked Arazi, 6-1, 7-6 (8/6), 7-6 (7/5) in 2hr 36min and will now play second seed Roger Federer or Argentine eighth seed David Nalbandian in the semi-finals on Friday.

Federer and Nalbandian play their quarter-final later Wednesday.

It is the best performance at an Australian Open for 23-year-old Ferrero, who has battled injuries throughout the tournament to get to the last four.

Ferrero is the first Spaniard into the Australian semi-finals since Carlos Moya in 1997.

Arazi was backing up after his wonderful straight sets victory over Australian 10th seed mark Philippoussis in the previous round and looked a little flat early before he rallied late in the second set.

"I knew that Hicham always plays good rallies and it's more normal to beat him 7-6, 7-6 than 6-1 (in the first set)," said Ferrero, who has now beaten Arazi in four of their six meetings.

"I missed some easy volleys at 5-4 and 40-15 but then I win the second set in a tiebreaker and in the third I began to feel a little bit tighter but I play good tennis at 5-4 on his serve and finally I could win the tough match.

"I'm in the semi-finals and Andy Roddick is out of the tournament, but I have to play two more matches to win the tournament, but I have two great players ahead of me so it will be very difficult."

Arazi looked a shadow of the player who crushed Philippoussis in the opening set and a half.

Ferrero broke his second service game as he moved the Moroccan around the back of the court and he repeated it in Arazi's next service game to storm to a 5-1 lead and the set.

The third seed maintained his dominance in the second game breaking Arazi in the opening game with the Moroccan howling in frustration over his growing number of errors.

The Spaniard was serving for the set at 5-4 and held two set points at 40-15 but in a dramatic turnaround Arazi fought back for two break points as Ferrero lapsed into error.

Arazi broke back to 5-5 and the set went to a tiebreaker.

There was a huge swing to the Moroccan who got to 6/3 and three set points, but Ferrero rubbed them out and then grabbed a set point of his own with Arazi's forehand just long after an exciting rally and then netting a backhand to put the Spaniard up two sets to love.

Ferrero's serve was coming under attack in the third set and he fought off two break points before holding in the fifth, but Arazi broke through in the world number three's next service game when a Ferrero backhand was well wide to Arazi to lead 4-3.

Ferrero was again under pressure in his next service game with Arazi holding two set points before he held for 5-4.

But Arazi dropped his next serve amid forehand errors to locked the games up.

Ferrero, steady under pressure, again played the better of the two in the second tiebreaker getting to 6/5 and match point and winning when Arazi's backhand found the net.
