Steve Waugh won the toss and sent W.A. in to bat.

Langer fell for 12 but that has been the only joy for NSW as they are 1/191 with Rogers on 85 n.o. and Hussey, 76 n.o. at tea.

What more can Hussey do to get the attention of the NSW National Selection Squad. He should seriously consider moving to NSW like Katich. It would probably get him Life Membership of the Australian team.

2/263 with Rogers 135 n.o.

Not you too, Canberra ? What's this NSW National Selection Squad thing ?

The last time I checked, Boony, AB, Hohns and Hilditch weren't NSWelshmen, James Sutherland is a Victorian and Buchanan is a Queenslander so what's the go ?

Well i think it has something to do with the last 2 Australian Captains being from NSW.......lol They still have a fairly big say especially overseas on who plays in the team.

For example if you have two players of equal ability. One player plays for Tasmania and the other for NSW. Who do you think will get selected first ?? Nine times out of ten my money would be on the New South Welshman.

Border and Hilditch were originally from NSW but played most of their cricket for QLD and SA respectively. Boon remains a Tasmanian and Hohns remains QLD based.

The ACB has been traditionally based in Melbourne and nigh all of it's senior figures for the past 25 years have been Victorians.

Yr point about Tasmanians was once vaild but much less so now. David Boon proved that a Tasmanian could make it on merit without having to go to a mainland state. Their only drawback is the general lack of attention from major media groups both Sydney AND Melb based.

Re Taylor and Waugh being the previous 2 Test captains, should their state for some reason disqualify them from the position ??? Could you frankly have named other realistic candidates ??

The fact that Waugh has fallen out with the selectors and esp Hohns particularly about players being eased out tends to blunt yr argument about having such power over selections.

Canberra, Mike Hussey IS a very unlucky fella. Problem is he is really a top order bat and their isn't any real vacancy at the moment and is possibly behind Martin Love for that chance at Test level. Maybe a chance for ODI.

Frankly his state doesn't come into it and yes, he's a much more realistic candidate for higher honours than his brother.

Katich did move to NSW for possible career advancement. The fact is he worked on his bowling since he came over and his early season form was outstanding. He may have been lucky but he was the fit for the vacancy when Lehmann went lame.

At stumps, it's 3/278 with Rogers on 142 n.o.
---------------------------------------------------------

What rubbish, JLC. Taylor and Waugh had no say in the selection of Australian teams. Waugh was clearly pissed off when he was dropped from the ODI team.

Of course they did overseas because the captain becomes a selector.

The only possible bias I ever detected was Waugh's insistence on playing Lee ahead of Fleming (after it was clear to most Lee was not performing) during the last Ashes tour.

Mike Hussey has been a solid contender for a couple of seasons now but is slipping back in the pack at the moment as two of his team-mates, Rogers and North, are making strong claims as is his younger brother.

Warriors exploit Waugh mistakes

Fox

NEW SOUTH WALES captain Steve Waugh had a forgettable day with two dropped catches as century-maker Chris Rogers (142no) lifted Western Australia to opening day honours at the WACA Ground.

Rogers' highest Pura Cup score of the summer ensured Waugh's decision to send WA into bat backfired with the Warriors 3-278 at stumps, Marcus North also unbeaten on seven.

The son of former New South Wales batsman John Rogers feasted on the Blues' bowling on home soil for the second time in two seasons after recording his highest first class score of 194 in the corresponding fixture last summer.

He extended his impressive record in the four-day competition this season to 610 runs at 76.25 after making 745 runs at 46.56 in 2002-03.

The polished left-hander was the chief tormentor for the Blues who beat the bat time after time for scant reward.

NSW entered the match desperately needing points against the bottom-placed Warriors to revive their flagging Pura Cup defence.

It started well with Nathan Bracken (1-57) having Test opener Justin Langer (12) hit a low catch to Dominic Thornely with the score at 16.

The Blues' pace attack produced plenty of movement all day but Waugh grassed a regulation chance at first slip with Hussey on nine off Stuart Clark's (1-50) bowling.

It proved costly for the departing great and his side as the dogged Hussey and Rogers put on 179 for the second wicket.

Rogers broke his bat on 43 after lunch and his new one almost proved too effective some seven runs later.

He chipped a ball in the air off his pads but Clark grassed a straightforward opportunity in the deep off Thornely's bowling (1-46) with the total at 1-132.

Waugh, in his last first class appearance in the west, had employed his sixth bowler in leg-spinner Stuart MacGill before the tea interval.

Medium-pacer Thornely handed the visitors some respite by having Hussey nudge a ball to wicketkeeper Nathan Pilon in the second over after tea.

But Rogers maintained his scoring rate and brought up his hundred by smashing Bracken through point for four.

He was given another life late in the day on 135 with Waugh dropping a chance which flew just below shoulder height off Matthew Nicholson's (0-52) bowling.

Murray Goodwin (16) was trapped in front by Clark in the final hour and Rogers and North sedately batted out the day.

NSW batsman Simon Katich arrived late this morning after flying in from Sydney following Australia's one-day victory over India at the SCG last night.

WA spinner Beau Casson was ruled out before play after injuring his hand and was replaced by quick Ben Edmondson.

Rogers was out for 142 and North and Campbell both made 87.

Campbell sent a little reminder to the selectors of just what he's capable of. His 87 came from 60 balls with 7 fours and 4 sixes !!

W.A. declared at 6/474 and NSW are 0/74 at tea.

Looks like anbother Pura game going Victoria's way. Even if NSW get the lead, it will be unlikely to go to an outright win.

Steve Waugh made a quickfire 51 before Edmondson got him. NSW are 4/306 at lunch. Thornely is now 57 no with Mark Waugh on 9.

4.55pm update. Thornely went for 59. NSW now 5/322

5.12pm update. Mark Waugh played on from Edmondson. He made a very quick 44. NSW now 6/367

5.18pm update. OOPS Pilon out with no addition to the score. NSW 7/367
Suprise!.Steve Waugh has declared with NSW still 107 runs behind.

Just a minor point Donny. Have you ever considered starting the thread and providing updates as an edit of your original post?

OK. That's a good idea, Pete. I'll do that till anyone adds or replies.

5/347. Thornely went for 59. They trail by 127.

Edmondson has 3/69 and Angel, 2/42

Mark Waugh and Pilon are doing the right thing. 56 from 35 balls. 5/357.

At 7/367, Steve Waugh declared. He had to. NSW need the 6 points badly.

They are giving W.A. a 107 run start but the time factor is all important. With 152 overs left, they would be hoping to dismiss them for around 250 or less or have them declare.

Just had a brainstorm, Donny. Why don't you start the thread as a scoreboard. You can adjust it as you go and the members can comment in the thread from then on.

Langer is 38 n.o. and Hussey, 12 as W.A. cruise to 0/56 after 16 overs.
-----------------------

It's now 0/128 after 31 overs. Alfie sure has returned to good form. He's 76 n.o. and Hussey, 45 n.o.

A W.A. win or a draw look the most likely outlcomes unless a declaration is made tomorrow. W.A. is 235 ahead and by stumps, they should be nearing a 350 lead.

Say they bat on for an hour and get a 440ish lead, that would give NSW a 5.5 r.p.o. chase for victory.
