NBL commissioner Rick Burton has confirmed the league is closing on its objective of playing games in Asia next season as part of a concerted push into basketball's growth region.

With widespread interest generated by Houston Rockets' No.1 draft pick and All-Star centre Yao Ming, together with the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Burton is driving the NBL's exploration of the high-growth Asian market.

The Wildcats and Melbourne Tigers sell-out at the Challenge Stadium in Perth on January 17 was telecast live into China via the ESPN Network in what was the league's greatest opportunity for exposure in its 25 years.

The broadcast, with a potential audience of 100 million, was seen as a preliminary step of playing in the region – possibly in Singapore and Manila – and eventually having an NBL team based in Asia.

Not entirely sure this is a goer. Not saying it's a bad idea but not sure it would be worth the expense.

Perhaps an annual challenge series between the various natl champions could be a start-off point. The Asian powers are China and Korea but there isn't anyone else within coo-ee.

The financial costs of including an Asian side in the NBL makes this not a realistic proposition in the forseeable future.

Unless of course most of the costs are burdened by the team that would be entering the competition, which again, points to this not being a realistic proposition anytime soon.

Costs of traveling is going to bring the idea unstuck aswell, I doubt many of the teams in the NBL would be able to afford to travel all the way to Asia to play.

I guess that is why they want to test the market first. Still it doesn't sound very viable.
