Hi folks i was just wondering what everyone thoughts on the good old New South Wales. Having lived there for 5 years high school 1991-1995 arncliff and eskineville high and another 2 years 1996-early 1999 living in bermaguie south coast nsw and taree central north coast nsw.
From an Victorian point of view what are your thougts on New South Wales. Having said that prior to 1850 Victria was New South Wales.

I lived in NSW for a year. It's very pretty but the culture is much different. The people up there have no interest in AFL at all and arnt as passionate about sport as Victorians.

Very happy to be back home. It was a tough decision to go to NSW and an even tougher one to come home but I'm very glad I did.

Always loved it in NSW although the greed of Sydneysiders can be pretty bad. House prices are ridiculously high and our live music scene has been destroyed by allowing poker machines into hotels.
In terms of sport people will turn up to BIG events but they have to be big. And if you team (whatever sport it is) goes through a rough patch, don't expect to find crowds at any of the matches, Sydneysiders are fickle.

Keep Tamworth, Bathurst and Dubbo and nuke the rest. Oh yeah, extended Queensland's border down to Coffs Harbour, THEN bomb it.

Historically, weren't Victorians originally transplanted Tasmanians ?? Interesting to note that some descendents seem to be be running genetically true to course.

I think alot of it is where you feel at home, I have lived here in Melbourne my whole life and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

People like Fradam and Mags who have actually lived in both, but prefer one state over the other feel more at home in Melbourne and Sydney because they were more at home there.

I don't think one state is better than the other, it all depends on the individual

Bec,

You summed it up perfectly; it's a matter of what suits you and your lifestyle.

I was born in Sydney but left when I was 3 months old and taken back to my mother's homeland. I returned to Sydney as a teenager for 3 years and got used to Sydney and it's pace.

Since returning to Australia as an adult, I have spent much of the time based in Sydney but have spent considerable periods in each of the main cities including a few years living in Melbourne. Out of choice, Sydney is my preference but I can comfortably spend considerable periods of time in most of these cities.

Maybe because of my background, I have a rather detached viewpoint on this "state" rivalry but it rather amuses yet saddens me. Aren't we all supposed to be part of the one country. Frankly the states are a throwback to the colonial era.

This may be offensive to many here but sadly the worst offenders in this state rivalry rubbish are Victorians. They seem to hold a resentment towards Sydney and NSW, which is generally not reciprocated, and a somewhat condescending attitude to the remaining states esp SA and WA.

There are no angels in this on any side but when you here the same things mouthed by political, civic and business figures, it does make one wonder. Get over it folks, accept your hometown for what it is and it's many positives and not try to sell it for what it is not.

Now lets see where do I begin.
I lived in Preston for years, went to PETS for 3 years, then got married and lived in mentone, went to work at 3AK,Got sick of the 4 systems in one day and decided to come to Sydney.
That was way back in 1969 and have lived in NSW ever since.
I went back to Melbourne to a funeral in Sprinvale,I also went to a sales conference in Hawthorn,I also went to see the PIES play at the MCG on two occasions....All those times it was Cold,Wet and bloody windy
When we settled in NSW and I tremarried, for the past 19 years the weather has been great,at least you know when the cold seasons are coming, the people in the bush are more friendly than the city. The weather here in peak Hill is HOT in summer and good in winter.
In the Liverpool area where we lived, the metropolis got so big that you couldnt go outside your front door without being stabbed by the Arabs,Lebonnese. At least up here we can sleep at night and not have to lock the place up.
There is three good things about melbourne as far as I am concerned.....the Highway in from the north, the highway out thru Gippsland and the AussieRules for 7 months ofthe year
That is why I prefer Sydney/NSW to Melbourne.

So I figure every time you went down to the milk bar to buy milk, you were stabbed. Your body must look like a pin cushion mate!

I have spent a bit of time on the South Coast of NSW. Well worth a visit if you are holidaying up this way. Also visited the Gosford area a couple of times.Beautiful place. As for Sydney, you can have it. Sydney drivers are the best and most courteous in Australia. They have to be. The road system is the worst I have ever seen. I lived in Melbourne most of my life and it is still the greatest place on earth. I will be back there this year. Time to come home.
