THE shrieking Hollywood starlet immortalised in the clutch of King Kong's giant paw has died.

Fay Wray, known as the "Queen of Scream" for her role in the 1933 horror classic, died at her Manhattan apartment on Monday. She was 96.
The star of almost 100 films from the 1920s to the '50s, Wray made her last public appearance two months ago at the New York premiere of the documentary Broadway: The Golden Age, in which she is featured.

Her leading men included Cary Grant, Gary Cooper and Spencer Tracy, but it was the damsel in distress clenched by King Kong atop the Empire State Building that won her lasting fame.

Wray received $14,000 -- a large sum then -- to play Ann Darrow, the object of King Kong's affections.

Originally unimpressed with the film, Wray noted at King Kong's premiere: "I thought there was too much screaming."

She later said: "I didn't realise then that King Kong and I were going to be together for the rest of our lives, and longer."

Born in Canada, Wray was married three times and is survived by three children, Susan Riskin, Robert Riskin and Victoria Riskin Rintels.
