Russian hostage crisis

Does anybody have any ideas what the russians should do here? The only thing I can see is to give in to what the terrorists want, and obviously that's not a good idea.

it seems to be a lose lose situation. theyll prolly stuff it up like the theatre. but then again i cant really see a way of not stuffing it up.

Will be interesting to hear from our resident moralists who are always parroting "don't negotiate with terrorists" or the like. Another front of "the war against terror" that has been ignored by the Iraq sideshow.

Then again their silence may prove deafening.

An unfortunate historical fact is that Chechnya has always been a fairly lawless area with banditry the rule rather than the exception, and only a v firm authoritarian hand will keep it in check.

The divisions in the Chechens themselves gives little hope of swift resolution, nor will a complete Russian withdrawal, bring peace.

And who has sponsored and armed the Chechens ??? Ah, that man who was for a short term bogey man no.1 with the White House until they remebered Saddam.

They are absolute scum to use children as hostages...that's just about as low as you can get.

There will be many deaths in this situation.
You cannot give the terrorists what they want or no school in the world will be safe. We cannot protect them all simple as that. So to give in now would signal to all terrorists around the world that it is open season on the worlds youth.

People of this type are murderers pure and simple and should be seen as nothing else.

The organisations that carry out/promote these activities have to be dealt with however the only possible long term solution is to address the problems that allow these bastards and their support to breed.

Often easier said than done, but the alternative is generation after generation of hate and unrest.

We have all too many unfortunate instances of this, haven't we ??

Maybe after this is resolved (and hopefully without any more deaths) Russia should just go Israel-style and start trying to knock out chechnyan terrorists groups or something.
