gotta give props to JBT, both for their activism & their extremely solid tunes.
& soz but wasn't their latest album at no.1 for about a year? minority views?
the rest of the luminaries at the ARIAs can pretty much be ignored, excepting the cat empire (what a band!), the living end & maybe missy higgins. |

None of those were political statements, were they? |
There is a time and place. He can say what he wants, but it doesn't mean anyone wants to hear it.
One other thing, good on JBT for having a point of view, but why don't the express it in a forum other than the Arias? Use there music more and more to promote their cause and they will get more people to listen than by shouting token phrases when they win an award. |

Joel, I think you'll find Butler's message comes through pretty clearly in his music. Which is personally not my cup of tea, but that's not the point.
What is the point is that if Butler had said "all the way with Dubya!", I somehow doubt Greg would be jumping up and down in protest on this forum. People only complain about time and place when someone says something that isn't music to their ears.
I can't be bothered discussing further though. I've got better things to do than argue with someone who cannot disguise his contempt for anyone else's point of view, and who can't distinguish anyone who disagrees with him from a stooge wrapped in a red flag.
If people can't debate a point without resorting to name-calling and flame-baiting, there's not much point.
Floor and megaphone all yours, Greg. Have it with my compliments. _________________ "The greatest thing that could happen to the nation is when we get rid of all the media. Then we could live in peace and tranquillity, and no one would know anything." - Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen |

Andrew,
I know Butler's message comes through in his songs, I didn't say they didn't. Perhaps he should confine it to that medium, or find a forum that is appropriate.
Btw, I would say the exact same thing if someone said 'Go Dubya', or whatever. I think the forum is innappropriate in any case. |

Tess, I don't agree. It is similar to when that tosser off Big Brother made a political statement. Was it the right forum? No. Why would the Arias be the right forum? |

I cannot understand why artists stand up at awards ceremonies and rant about their (usually leftist) views. John Butler's behaviour on sunday night was not the worst you'll see, but he should have just left his views about politics to himself. These guys don't seem to realise that it is an honour to accept an award, not an opportunity to make sure everybody knows who you vote for. What would happen if Guy Sebastian or somebody stood up there and started giving everyone a sermon about how everyone should repent??
John Butler Trio music sucks anyway.....I can't believe he beat Pete Murray for best artist
Rove's alright.....most of what he says isn't funny, but isn't that the case with all stand-up comedians??? His Shannon Noll video clip was hilarious though. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Stick a camera in an "artists" face and they will more than likely push whichever barrow is currently taking their fancy.
Nothing new in this. And will never be stopped.
