Braveheart William loses fight for life

07feb05

WILLIAM, the kitten allegedly doused with petrol and set alight in Sydney two weeks ago, has died.

Named after Braveheart William Wallace, William died overnight in his sleep at a specialist clinic at Sydney University's veterinary hospital, the RSPCA said today. He died following the first in a series of surgical procedures needed to reconstruct his skin.
All attempts by staff to revive him were unsuccessful.

RSPCA senior veterinarian Simone Maher, who cared for William, said the kitten was given strong pain relief and was not in pain when he died.

"William's fighting spirit and continued trust in, and affection for, human beings, despite his ordeal, were touching and inspirational," Dr Maher said.

"He found his way into many hearts.

"He was a very brave kitten and we gave him the best possible chance we could. In the end William just ran out of fight."

Ten-week-old William was found cowering under a house at Mount Druitt, in Sydney's west, with second degree burns to 30 per cent of his body on January 24.

He was only given a 50-50 chance of survival at the time.

A 15-year-old youth from Tregear will face Cobham Children's Court on February 21, charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

An 18-year-old youth, also from Tregear, is due to face Penrith Local Court on February 21 charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

I'm really sorry to hear about the kitten and I have to agree, people should go to jail for that kind of thing, not just for being cruel to animals, but that sort of psychopath is a menace to society in general........

having said that, I find it hard to believe that a kitten got a whole article in a newspaper..... and to label it "braveheart" is going a little bit too far.... what next a full news story on, "rat fights bravely against cancer"..... I'd be interested to hear what other people think about that too....

Very sad to hear, I cannot believe someone would do that to such a harmless animal.

So Lisey, you condone the treatment that cats have received from mankind lately?

I'm very disappointed.

Calm down Eunos, Alyssa said she hated cats..... she didn't say that she thought it would be fun to torture them..... it's just the same as if I said I hate dogs (which I do incidentally) that would not mean that I would in any way support any cruel treatment to them (their eradication should be quick and painless Twisted Evil )

The only critters on this planet that deserve to be tortured are people.

Bring on the end of the world ... and may it be slow and painful.

Humanity ... You have got what you deserve ... Now f%$ off to hell.

I knew that the mentallity of some people on this site were juvenile. There is nothing wrong with ANY animal, its just the mentallity of the owner that is questionable.
You wouldnt want to come near my place as we have cats, dogs and people who love animals.
I fel very sorry for William, and I hope that the 'MORONS' that hurt the kitten get their just deserts.
I can just imagine Magpie Greg and his mentallity,BUT it takes all kinds

I think no matter how people feel about the animals they still have no right to harm them in such a discusting way.

An innocent animal has every right to live in peace, and I hope these people suffer for what they did.

I believe I would feel just as strongly about this if it was an animal I don't particulary like just as much as any other.
