There is a rumour currently circulating that Paul Hester, former Crowded House and Split Enz drummer is dead.
I've seen it on BigFooty (the music forum) and also on a local music site called Melband.
So far I've heard nothing on mainstream media.
Does anyone know if this is true? |

Tess, we don't know the demons he lived with. It's been a well known fact for years that he was Bi-Polar.

If only life was that simple, Tess.
I suppose, if a perfectly sane person kills themself, then yes ... you're right.
But would a perfectly sane person do that?
I think this is probably more a case of mental illness claiming another victim. Sadly it happens all the time. I'd venture to say that most people who kill themselves are mentally ill in some way. |

Not a huge Crowded House fan, but my god what an absolute tragedy. He seemed to be such a jovial and lovable bloke. So sad that he would take his own life. I've been close to following the same path myself in the past, so i can sympathise greatly. So frustrating to hear narrow minded comments like "oh what a selfish act, i dont feel sorry for him"  Just as well you don't work at lifeline Tess. When one is on the brink, believe me, those very same thoughts of selfishness go through your mind. One feels immense guilt about even contemplating it, but still unfortunetaly, people go through with it. Can you imagine the pain Paul was feeling? Maybe not. Suicide is never a solution, but we can never understand what would drive someone to this and thus try to prevent it, if we don't open our minds and try to be a little more understanding.

I think the point Tess was trying to make may have been that often the person who commits suicide is seen as the main victim, when it is really the family that suffers more. Also perhaps sometimes suicide is portrayed as an act of bravery, when it is really an act of weakness. I can agree with you partly there Alf, when you say that nobody sane would kill themselves, but there are different reasons why people suicide, not just depression...... after all I just watched Romeo and Juliet last night, and they don't kill themselves because of mental illness..... it is a fictional story, but it is possible that a similar situation could occur in real life.

Agree with the first point, but disagree with the second one. I've never in my life, come across someone saying that suicide's an act of bravery, or is portrayed as?! Suicide is the ultimate form of weakness AND selfishness for that matter, but we shouldn't judge someone to be these things. I'm sure Paul Hester has showed many times in his life that he can be brave and selfless, we all do don't we? There's no excuse for what Paul Hester did, but there are reasons. Its the reasons that we need to listen to so we can prevent someone doing the same thing. If we just say that he's selfish and weak, then we don't learn anything from it.

Soo sad 
My family were huge fans of Crowded House.
7 years ago when my Grandpa was in hospital, we used to see Paul there visiting a family member. Then one day Mum spoke to him and since then whenever we saw him he would say Hi.

Very Sad - The Suicide issue is a very hard one. I can understand people saying it is Selfish I have seen it first hand how hard it is for families dealing when a young family member suicides as many of us have and maybe experienced . Imagine what his family is going through? Its the unkown and the unanswered questions that haunt and hurt the most.
But people control their own destiny to a degree.
R.I.P. Paul Hester.
