thank you for digging this thread up. great read.

I have always been curious as to when Swanny went from an ordinary player (i barely noticed him since he was drafted to 2005), to one of the elite midfielders he is now. I know much has been said about his court case and how close he was to be delisted, but it is still an amazing and inspiring story as to how he came leaps and bounds.

It is also funny reading he was competing for a spot with Cole back in those days, LMAO

hopefully the next chapter of the book will be:

"From an Ugly Duckling to a Premiership Player - The Transformation has Completed"

It is with great sadness that the great Dane leaves our Football Club. I always believed in the short t number 36 TEA POT and knew he would turn into gold. Thank you Swanny have a couple of pig's ears you have been a blast. Your Slaughter of Essendon, the Flag in 2010 and when we knocked off the Eagles in extra time were sights to remember and hundreds of others, thanks.

What would I know... very sad to see the great man hang up the boots. Footy will be just a little more mundane without him.

Was hoping to find this thread on page 1 today. Wouldn't it be ace if he actually called his upcoming book 'Defending Dane Swan'.

You weren't Robinson Crusoe jackcass. when I first saw him in the VFL I never thought he'd play a single AFL game, what with his waddle and his very ordinary (at best) kicking style. He looked so ordinary. Turned out he was a diamond in the rough. An absolute champion player and champion bloke. Admired and loved by all Magpie fans.

^^^ It's actually scary, JW. Some of the early posts in this thread are almost as surprising as some of the rubbish written about Langdon this year when the Future Captain had had no pre-season and was carrying plenty of injuries.

It's easy to pick Moore for a star - the guy would have been a good choice for number 1 draft pick. It's harder to pick the guys who can read the game and find the football but don't have any obviously "special" physical attributes.

Here's an interesting comparison of Smith this year and Swan at the same age (in 2006 and, by then, playing his fourth season):

http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?playerStatus1=A&tid1=5&playerStatus2=A&tid2=5&type=A&pid1=4259&pid2=491&fid1=O&fid2=O

And here's an even more interesting comparison of Langdon and Swan at age 21:

http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?playerStatus1=A&tid1=5&playerStatus2=A&tid2=5&type=A&pid1=3975&pid2=491&fid1=P&fopt1=2015&fid2=P&fopt2=2005

No, I'm not saying that Smith (or even the Future Captain) will be better players than Swan (who has been perhaps Collingwood's consistently best player of the last 50 years). But the statistical comparisons do contain an implied cautionary message: Be very careful about making early calls dismissing players who can find the football!

^ I'm normally extremely loath to run a ruler through a player for that very reason but got caught out by Swanny.

Some good judges, including yourself, got caught out, jackcass. I wasn't wanting to highlight that particular people got it wrong, just that plenty of people did.

I tipped this early! ;0
