Pies to re-sign Rocca

Collingwood key forward Anthony Rocca has agreed to a new two-year contract and is expected to re-sign with the Pies within the week.

With Fremantle, West Coast and St Kilda in search of quality out-of-contract players via the pre-season draft in December, the Magpies have moved quickly to keep their best-and-fairest runner-up of two years ago.

Collingwood chief executive Greg Swann yesterday said an in-principal agreement had been reached with Rocca's management.

"He is a deputy vice-captain and one of our leaders, so we're delighted to have secured him until at least the end of 2003," Swann said.

Rocca, who turns 24 next week, is one of only eight players on Collingwood's list to have played more than 100 games.

The long-kicking forward started his career with Sydney, where he played 22 games in 1995-1996 before being recruited to Victoria Park to join his older brother Saverio. He has played 114 games.

Rocca started this season slowly, but after a one-match stint with VFL club Williamstown his form had been generally impressive before a moderate effort against Richmond last Friday night.

Collingwood, which has almost completed its re-signing of high-profile players for next season, is close to finalising a new two-year deal for Leon Davis. The Magpies yesterday returned from a two-day camp at Portsea, where coach Mick Malthouse gave his players a change of environment before trying to retain their slender hold on eighth place.

Meanwhile, one of Collingwood's major sponsors, the telco company Primus Telecom, is reviewing its $500,000 a season association with the club.

As the Magpies seek to renew their other major sponsorship, with Emirates Airlines, Primus has confirmed that it is yet to commit to an extension of its four-year association with the club.

"It is still under review," said Primus Telecom spokesman George Hazim.

"It isn't over and a decision one way or another will be made next week."

The Magpies recently sent a delegation to Emirates Airlines headquarters in the United Arab Emirates and remain optimistic of that deal being renewed.

There is less optimism surrounding the Primus Telecom deal, however, although the club issued a statement last night denying that its commercial position might be threatened by the possible withdrawal of Primus Telecom.

"The Collingwood Football Club is and will continue to be one of the strongest commercially supported clubs in the AFL," it read.

"Any suggestions that the Collingwood Football Club's commercial sponsorship position is under pressure are totally false."

Wake up folks !!. this doesnt mean he'll stay, it just means that the club has the option to keep him or trade him.

Alf, generally contracts dont expire until the 31dec of each year so we could have excersiced an option to trade him without doing this. The other factor being that if we do trade him given that he has agreed to a contract with us, irrespective of what his new club agrees to pays him we must meet the difference for the term he originally signed on with Collingwood(re Barry Mitchell, we are still paying him well into retirement..hehe). Either way I dont think we will trade him and I tend to think this is a right decision. Quality talls are becoming a scarce commodity and I have a feeling our recruiters will possibly sacrifice one of several young midfilders we have for a tall.
I would never name names but I think its truly on the cards.
