Very sad story Tess.
The worse part is that the mutilation continues to this day. |

Yep, I saw it. Very courageous story. Just out of interest Tess, is that circumstance, being born with both sets of genitals, is that a hermaphradite (spelt right?) ?Excuse my naiveness. I know in some countries these people are treated as being very "special", and are almost treated god like, places like India I believe. My sister is a nurse in Melb. and she sees genital mutilation on a regular basis, makes me sick! _________________ Enjoy yourself. Its later than you think! |

apparently hermaphrodites are fairly common in some African tribes... as for genital mutilation, well I guess circumcision is one thing (after all its an important part of Judaism, Islam, Aboriginal religions, and also some Christian organizations) but I feel sorry for the boys who have to be circumcised when they're 13 (argh).... also apparently they circumcise girls in places in Africa, no idea exactly what that procedure involves ...skaman when you say that genital mutilation occurs on a regular basis are you talking about circumsision or hermaphrodites or something else? Because I can imagine that would be pretty tough for a nurse to see that all the time. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Okay Dave, I mean females in particular, some African and arabic origins cut the clitoris out, so the women has no pleasure (also assuming they will not "stray"), also they have their vagina sewn, only leaving room for bodily functions. Circumsision on boys , thats debatable too, but the mutilation on women thats barbaric in my book. I dont wont to condone other nationalities on their beliefs but this practice to me is deplorable. _________________ Enjoy yourself. Its later than you think! |

Female circumcision is also quite prevalent in many areas of Indonesia. I have an indonesian sister in law and she was circumcised as a young girl. _________________ Jacqui © Proud Pies 2003 and beyond |

I sort of wish I didn't know that now...... pretty shocking I think there's a film about this out now, I saw it on the Movie Show, it was about some women in Africa taking a stand against female circumcision.... thanks for the explanation skaman _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |
