Big Thommo played in the first Collingwood match I ever saw. I was four years old.
RIP Len, deepest condolences to your family. _________________ "Only the weak believe that what they do in battle is who they are as men" - Thomas Marshall - "Ironclad". |

Vale Len Thompson.
Quite simply the greatest ruckman collingwood has seen. I saw Len play many times and no one got near him. Too young to die.

I had to leave work today when I got the news. I broke down. He was one of our greatest. Must be given a State funeral. Why not? It was good enough for EJ.
We must bury him with full honours. His best games were at Victoria Park. He loved playing there to all of us as we loved cheering him.
RIP Len your spirit lives with us forever. 60 is too young. _________________ I love this club and I hold anyone in contempt who does not think it is worth fighting for. |

Len Thompson to my mind was the greatest all round ruckman the game has seen ( in my time) and the template for every modern big bloke over 6' 5" that has played since.
Len Thompson..the reason I followed footy as a kid.
A very sad day & I feel for his family.

Very sad news
Just shows how life can be short and you need to take your chances when they come.
Reported on the news in Adelaide that there will be a minutes silence before the game on Friday night - hopefully the Geelong faithful will respect this.
The idea of all wearing black arm bands seems most appropriate given the respect Len commanded.

There are some things that are hard to express in words.
We lost a legend of the game this morning and the Thompson family lost a wonderful loving husband and father.
Len loved life and his life revolved around his family, his mighty Magpies and his mates, not least of all Wayne Richardson, Tuddy and Macka and, of course, Eddie McGuire. All four gave heartfelt tributes to the media today with emotion etched all over their voices. We lost Bobby to cancer and in many respects we were ready for the news when it finally came. But this is different. This was too sudden. No warning. No time to prepare. This just compounds the sadness as we all lament the fact that, having just turned 60 three weeks ago, Len has been taking far to young.
I have only brief recollections of Len playing in the late 70's, but I have been fortunate enough to share the occassional conversation with one of the most polite and humble of champions you could ever meet. Len could tell a great story and his life was always throwing great material his way. From the night he walked home from Windy Hill in 64, to how he got his first game in 65 by inadvertently breaking Gabo's ankle at training, to striking with his mate Tuddy, to the time he got boozed bused and nearly blew up the breathalizer, etc, etc, etc.
The mark of the man is in the volume of tributes that have poured in from both friend and foe barely 12 hours after the terrible news came over the radio.
Josh, your time has come. Be the champion that Len knows you can be, rise to the challenge and lead the Mighty Magpies to glory!!!
Len's first game was a Prelim on this day 42 years ago, his last was also a Prelim in 78. Friday night now has a whole new perspective.
Our thoughts go out to all those that have been shocked and saddened by todays terrible news.
Shane.
