So, is there a West German blues legend that's stopping JK from claiming the "All German" crown?

Is it this dude? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enroLcZ4DCk

^^^ Well, now that Kent Henry is, sadly, now longer able to lend his soaring slide guitar to John's powerful blues-shouting, perhaps a little ukulele is just what he needs. Let me know how you think ukulele fills might help with this, from 1973: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jH-ofWDZkI

As for East and West Germany, I think John probably still thinks of himself as escaping from the East: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOUhVps3zQQ

Listening to all of these wonderful performances - and reading about some of them, I came across the news that the drumming star on John Kay's first two solo albums, Pentti "Whitey" Glan, passed away earlier this month. Born in Finland and hailing ultimately from Toronto, Glan got his first serious exposure when his band Bush toured with Steppenwolf in 1971. After both groups disbanded, he helped John Kay for a couple of albums and then anchored some of the hottest bands of the 70's, along with his old mate Prakash John on bass. The pair can be heard in full glory on one of the grandest records of that era, Lou Reed's "Rock'n'Roll Animal" - we all know Reed's great artistic contribution was with the Velvets - but, for most of us growing up then, that iconic recording contains the definitive versions of "White Light/White Heat" and "Rock'n'Roll". The band had the best double-guitar pairing in the world in those days in Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner. "Whitey", Prakash, Hunter and Wagner jumped ship a year later and were the powerhouse behind Alice Cooper's "Welcome to My Nightmare".

Here's "Whitey" and Prakash showing their wares on a live recording of "School's Out".

Vale Pentti Glan.

Nup. Can't think of a single piece of music that would be enhanced by the addition of the ukulele. Certainly nothing by Steppenwolf.

These guys are good fun though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLgJ7pk0X-s

I suppose there may be someone alive who doesn't own three copies of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJYu9Rl_23Y

And, for those of you who need an antidote for the overblown production, there's always the underblown production of the Velvets:

Sweet Jane (don't make the mistake of listening to the "extended" remastered version on Loaded - the as-released short version is better - the "heavenly wine and roses" section, in my opinion, ruins the drive of the song - I suppose that's why it was cut) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkumhBVPGdg

One for the BOM. Got to love the fade-out vocals.

On Sunday, it will be 50 years since Otis died, way too young, in a plane crash.

Here's one of the most iconic moments in rock music - Otis working up the crowd at the end of the first verse of "I've been Loving You Too Long" at the Monterey International Pop FestivaL This 5-song performance, backed by Booker T and the MGs, and the Markeys, found its way onto a very widely coveted record - one side was Otis, the other was Jimi's ground-breaking performance - between them, the two standout acts at Monterey:

Here he is signing another version of his own famous song:

A famous duet with Carla Thomas:

Here's one of the most beautiful songs ever, written by Otis and Steve Cropper (and supported, of course, by Steve's magnificent guitar): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTVjnBo96Ug

And, the Blues Brothers' anthem, "I Can't Turn You Loose": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xEvsJtrl60

Rhino’s beautifully packaged Otis Redding anthology “Dreams to Remember”. The sound quality is tremendous - when Otis sings “I’m a Changed Man”, it sounds like he recorded it yesterday and the famous Monterey set (which ends the second disc) sounds like he’s in the room with you. I really recommend it to Otis fans, even if you already have all his albums.

thats cool, and i see they still have the Monterey festival now. Have you ever been? We drove down there from San Francisco when we were on our honeymoon, beautiful place, gorgeous coast line. They have some cool car shows there too, maybe one day!!

and you sure cant beat sitting on the dock of the bay, just a fantastic song and words.

Off to a day at the green today at Rochford winery, my oldest friend got us all tickets, Kc and the sunshine band - hope they sing please dont go, gotta love that one! village people, sister sledge, and Marcia Hines who i have always loved, her songs have the best stories.

cheers, enjoy your jazz xx

so we rock up to Rushford winery at 4 on the dot, and they announce the village people aint coming! cant believe how many queued for a refund and left! but then again, Marcia Hines was good, but a little disappointed she didnt do my favorite slow songs, then sister sledge came on, not great, then the YMCA comes on and they fill the stage with people who had dressed up! that was actually really good fun! they had a DJ to fill the VP gap, which wasnt bad, then KC and the sunshine band came on. did a couple and then played Dont Go, and the whole place went nuts, it was awesome. certainly worth the price of my free ticket!! we left after that, its a long drive home. Dont reckon its the best venue for live music, even when we had decent seats for Elton John, the sound didnt compare to Rod Laver, where we saw him a couple of years ago, and yesterday it was dismal! Day on the Green at Werribee mansion had far better sound quality. Maybe its the hills! still good day out with good friends, not for purists though im guessing!
cheers
