No surprises, but Carey's wrong.
Firstly, Cloke does not want to go, has never even indicated he might leave.
Secondly, we have a good list, even a great one, and could afford to lose almost any player. Cloke's not one we can afford to lose, unless we already had an excellent replacement lined up (a kid in the draft would not be it, as KPPs take time). Midfielders and flankers are far easier to replace, and if we had to lose a player it would be one of these.
I have no problem with Cloke asking for and getting a 5 year deal. This would only take him up to 29-30. If he's starting to decline at that time, so what? Having one or two years at the end where he's not quite at his best would be fair reward for a career of service. Loyalty to a club is all well and good, why should there be no loyalty to a player? We'd probably be in a rebuild at that time anyway. Buckley and A.Rocca both had ordinary ends to their careers.
The demand that a 4 year deal should come at a higher cost than a 5 year is a reasonable one as well. It's the club's choice if they want a discount at 5 years or a higher price at 4.
I'm certain a deal will be done. Cloke has consistently said he wants to stay, and the club knows they can't afford to lose him. It will take time to work out exactly how much we can pay and possibly the off-field inducements that will be included, but a deal will be done.
