Following an extensive investigation, Essendon Football Club has terminated the membership of a supporter involved in a racial vilification incident during the Essendon v Sydney match on Friday night at Etihad Stadium.
The Club has confirmed the comments were directed at Sydney Swans player Adam Goodes.
Essendon chief operating officer Xavier Campbell said the Club would not tolerate racial vilification in any form.
“Racial vilification is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” Campbell said
“As a Club, we do not accept appalling behavior of this nature - No matter your race, religion or gender, football is a game of inclusion.”
“It is extremely disappointing incidents of this nature are still occurring.”
Essendon members reported the incident to stadium management during the game and as a result Victoria Police ejected the member from the stadium.
“I commend our supporters for taking a stand and having the courage to report this matter to the appropriate authorities. If you’re going to behave in this manner we don’t want you attending our games.”
“The member in question has expressed his deep remorse for the incident and accepted full responsibility for his actions.”
“His membership has been terminated and his reapplication for membership will only be considered after he has undertaken a racial vilification education program.”
The Club has contacted the Sydney Swans and Adam Goodes to offer its sincere apologies about the incident. Adam Goodes was not aware of the incident until after the game.
"On behalf of the entire Essendon Football Club, I want to publicly apologise to Adam Goodes for this extremely disappointing incident,” Campbell said.
“Essendon prides itself on diversity and inclusion – players and fans deserve and expect the right to enjoy sport free from any form of abuse or harassment.”
“As a Club, we will now work even harder to educate our members and supporters about racial vilification and cultural awareness in our game.”

I see in todays Age, our old mate Goodsey reckons he was racially abused by a Dons fan, in last weeks game. Assuming he was, and of course I don't condone it, I wonder if he pointed them out, and had them removed from the ground, ala that young girl he went after last season ?
Just asking, that's all.

Of course, we could be pissed off that an Aboriginal player is still being subjected to this stuff in 2014.
But no, let's have a go at him instead.

Well it’s sad that it’s still happening but the Media is not up in arms like after a Collingwood Supporter did same thing

Neville Jetta was also racially vilified last week against the Dogs, very sad that people are still hurling racial abuse at people. Forgetting that it was Goodes that was abused for a second, this issue continues to rear it's ugly head and regardless of who it is there needs to be some harsher sanctions to stop this from happening further.
