So, what exactly did he do? Post something inappropriate? I don't want pics, I just have no idea what he did that warranted automatic expulsion. What does inappropriate mean in this instance?

Apparently, he sent nude pictures of himself to a fan, and her mum saw them.

The club said it was the last straw, as there have been other issues as well.

Misuse of social media!? If so, pathetic from the club.

Yeah, I'm sure they were totally given the opportunity to speak out. Fascist scum.

I'm not into censorship but I am into protecting Nicks, having not seen the posts in question, I can only hope that is what's taken place.

My thoughts too. Casual gossip might be ok at the pub with friends, but online on a public forum it can be seen as defamation. And justifiably, too.

Letter from MM to the Carlton fans reprinted in the Herald Sun.

Quote:

Dear Carlton members,

The club has taken the decision to part with defender Josh Bootsma, following inappropriate use of something called ‘social media’.

This decision has not been taken lightly and has followed a thorough process.

The first step, was Andrew McKay knocking on my door and telling me that Josh Bootsma had breached club policy regarding social media.

I told Andrew I didn’t understand any words in that sentence.

‘Who’s Josh Bootsma?’ I asked and he reminded me he was a ‘defender’ for the Northern Blues.

‘That curly haired guy?’ I asked.

Andrew said social media was popular with the young people, which alarmed me.

I told him we had no place for communists at Carlton or in Australia for that matter.

He was quick to point out it is ‘social’ not ‘socialist’ and is mainly people posting pictures of what they just ate or updating people on banal things like how hot or cold the weather is.

We quickly called in some consultants to brief me on Twitter, Snapchat and Faceplace. After twelve hours of listening to these eleven-year-olds, I think I really got a handle on it.

Anyway, apparently Bootsma’s been putting inappropriate material on the social medias.

This is something that is apparently against the Carlton’s and the AFL’s ‘proper use of social media’ policy.

It baffles me that doing these things need to be spelt out at all.

What ever happened to romance? If I was a young guy, the only people I’d be tweeting are a girl’s parents, to ask permission to take their daughter to a dance.

While we won’t exactly miss Bootsma on the field, it’s another reminder that society is going to hell in a hand basket. Or as I know like to say LOL (I think that fits in there).

He'd had disciplinary and behavioral issues for a full 12 months leading up to this, and this was the last straw. He's sent nude pictures to a teenage girl FFS. Her Mum found out and reported it to the club. Given the club and the AFLPA felt the termination of his contract was necessary, I'd say there is a very good chance the girl was underage. (Disclaimer: I am not claiming that this is what actually happened, just using the info I have to make an educated guess)

If that's the actual case in sure none of his teammates would have protested at his dismissal. I know I wouldn't have.

He sent naked pictures of himself to a teenage girl apparently.

That in itself is not a crime as long as she's over 16 I would presume unless of course it was unwanted by the recipient.

Given he's a spud probably helped make this decision by the club far easier.

What does 'teenage' mean? 13? 16? 19? If she was an adult and was a voluntary recipient of the images, then who the $&#% cares? If she was under the age of consent and/or he sent them as an act of sexual harassment, then that's a rather different matter—possibly one for the police—but I of course still don't see it as a matter for the club, even if it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I'm sick of clubs treating players like their personal property and holding jurisdiction over their off-field actions (and being permitted to do so by their contracts and employment law). Even if Bootsma had poor in-house discipline, this incident—serious or otherwise—just shouldn't have come into the decisionmaking process at all.

Social media is poison and as far as i am concerned players would be advised to stick with say blog pages and that is it. The whole club is exposed and if they don't like it piss off. Journalists are lazy twats (yes you pricks reading this) and it is an easy get. The sooner the players realise it the better. Narcistic and self indulgent bullshit and this case it has cost a bloke his career, no matter how crap it was.

So spewing it wasn't someone who can actually play. This will help improve their list, dammit!

Put it this way, she was young enough that her mum was unhappy and reported it to the club. That's how it became the clubs problem and despite your inability to understand the basics of employment law, the club had to deal with it.

From what i read elsewhere, this was really the final straw for the club, the guy apparently had some different behaviour.

David, If your late for work with no good excuse you get a warning, he was repeatedly late for work and appointments. Part of his employment conditions are to keep in reasonable shape to play footy, he also apparently failed this condition more than once. In fact a top draft pic could not get his act together to make a real crack at the top level.

Now to top it off, they have a parent of a teenager upset about nude pics sent to her daughter, teenager, teenager, teenager. He would have been drafted around the time of the saints bullshit, is he a total moron? Let's not forget the girlfriend in hospital as the story breaks about to have his baby.

But the second paragraph doesn't matter in the case of his employment, he's been warned several times for various non compliance to his contract and Carlton had every right to sack him. Good on them.
