So, seriously, what’s everyone doing house-protection wise? I heard a suggestion that cleaning the roof gutters is advised... otherwise, sandbags? Surprised

No point cleaning the gutters, Melbourne gutters aren't designed for tropical downpours (they use bigger ones up north) so they're going to overflow regardless.

Make sure the mobile is charged and a backup battery if you have one, that's about it.

Rainfall potential upgraded (down my way at least).

Was 20 to 50mm for Friday now 30 to 80mm.

Was 20 to 60mm for Saturday now 35 to 95mm.

Do fat bastards float?

Woke up to a light breeze, it’s around 18-20 I reckon, and steady, but not heavy, rain.

Beat up of the century so far.

We've only had 11.8mm of rain in Melbourne so far. 5mm of rain was recorded between 1pm to 2pm.

we had 17mm here between 2:30 and 3pm, 20mm by 3:30.

I took an early mark from work (what are they going to do, sack me?) and going through Warrendyte to Doncaster it was pissing down. roads partially flooded as drains can't cope

To be fair, they're probably the only professionals in the whole world who are paid to predict the future and then kicked routinely if they get it wrong. Perhaps they should be regulated by ASIC and made to publish a disclaimer with every forecast ' "Past weather is no predictor of future weather", or somesuch.

Predicting the future is a reasonably inexact occupation. It is still possible that there may be flooding (I have the children working on the boat in the shed, as I write) but there has been plenty of rain about in the last 24 hours, so if you look past the hyperbole, the BOM were about right - it's certainly cooler outside and there's less sunshine than there was earlier this week.

more overnight, 30mm here since 9am yesterday.

Up in the Riverina they've had around 50mm so far which, while it will be great for the "garden" at my house up there it will be interesting for the farmers. Those who could would have been frantically harvesting crops in the lead up to Friday. Those who's crops weren't ready may lose them. 50mm of rain and the humidity could destroy a wheat crop
