Both clubs should be very sad. It's a huge waste, as the coach said (not talking exactly about this).

Hindsight is convenient.
Shaw got what he deserved for being an ongoing OOC / undisciplined dickhead.
He owes Buckley for saving his career but lacks the guts / grace to admit it.
He is/was "a chip off the old block"; His father Ray a bloody talented player who spat the dummy onfield regularly to the team's disadvantage.

Funny how the “undisciplined dickhead” will probably by round 6 of next season have played more games than any Collingwood player, ever. And averaged more than 20 games per season over a career that has already spanned 15 years.

Collingwood could always do with a few more players that don't break down all the time.

Adams will still be running around on the MCG long after Shaw has retired.

That alone wins us this trade.

Next year will be Heater's last season.

He was close to retiring at the end of the year, before deciding to commit for another season.

Had GWS won the GF, Shaw may have given it away.

He may yet still get to hold that mantle, but he'd have to pass David Cloke first! A grand final next year would at least equal it if he plays every game.

Here's a list of most games played by players who have appeared for Collingwood:

1. David Cloke: 333 (incl. 219 for Richmond)
2. Tony Shaw: 313
3. Heath Shaw*: 308 (incl. 135 for GWS)
4. Gordon Coventry: 306
Paul Williams: 306 (incl. 117 for Sydney)
6. Scott Pendlebury*: 301
Len Thompson: 301 (incl. 20 for South Melbourne and 13 for Fitzroy)
8. Richard Osborne: 283 (incl. 187 for Fitzroy, 16 for Sydney and 51 for Footscray)
9. Nathan Buckley: 280 (incl. 20 for Brisbane)
10. Wayne Richardson: 277
11. Heath Scotland: 268 (incl. 215 for Carlton)
Chris Tarrant: 268 (incl. 72 for Fremantle)
13. Scott Burns: 264
14. Jock McHale: 261
15. Dale Thomas: 258 (incl. 101 for Carlton)
Dane Swan: 258
Daniel Wells: 258 (incl. 243 for North Melbourne)
18. Saverio Rocca: 257: (incl. 101 for North Melbourne)
19. Travis Cloke: 256 (incl. 10 for Western Bulldogs)
20. Geoff Raines: 254 (incl. 134 for Richmond, 14 for Essendon and 59 for Brisbane)
Gavin Brown: 254

Len Thompson should have played his 300th in black and white. Crying or Very sad

Paul Williams reaching 300 at another club also hurts. We may have gone a step further in 2002 had he stayed.

Was he a part of that deal? Well there's always an opposite reaction when you change things in the past.

"*Note: In 2000, Collingwood embarked on a convoluted but ultimately successful trade week that does not make sense in the list above and is better explained by an article published on collingwoodfc.com.au on Wednesday 13 September 2000: Paul Williams was traded to Sydney for pick No. 8 and No. 39. Pick No. 8 was then on traded to Fremantle for Brodie Holland, James Clement and pick No. 22. Mal Michael and pick No. 22 was traded to Brisbane for Jarrod Molloy and pick 44. Pick 44 was then on traded to Geelong for Carl Steinfort. Ricky Olarenshaw and pick No. 39 was traded to North Melbourne for pick No. 37."

https://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/news/2014-10-13/collingwoods-trade-history

"No one really took notice of Collingwood's decision to chase two players who had fallen out of favour with Fremantle's then coach Damian Drum and the Dockers' acceptance that they were happy to take a mid-range pick as compensation. ...

Clement made his intentions clear when he first came to Victoria - and Victoria Park.

He told the Herald Sun: "I don't think that (Damian) Drum and I saw eye to eye. A lot of guys have left (Freo) and had actually reasonable to good careers. I hope to be one of them.

"I think it could be a case of probably (some) guys don't get the best out of themselves in a two-team town where there is a lot of worshipping of footballers." "

You could argue that there were many other ways of trading with Fremantle for Clement.

And maybe we should have held on to Mal Michael
