Has this been the catalyst for our demise? Discuss?

Howe made a big mistake talking Stevo to own up, should have told the kid to cancel all bets, never bet again, keep his mouth shut, don't say a word to anyone. Instead, Stevo owned up, and got royally shafted by the League, he got bugger all any lesser sentence, even for being hones and coming forward, he got sweet F A for being honest !!

Big mistake owning up, and he got shafted. now we are in deep shit, his absence defo cost us a win tonight, and against the dockers too. We have not been the same team since he got suspended. Fact.

Ridiculous to even bring this up. Both Stephenson and Howe would agree that Howe did the right thing, and anyone with any common sense knows that too. “Just keep it under wraps” would be grounds for a much bigger disaster down the track. It’s old news now, move on.

^ No one would have found out. Right. Must be why no player ever has been done for betting before. Guess Heath Shaw’s eight-week ban was a figment of my imagination.

"Did the right thing"??? How can you bring morality into this??? The AFL administration, Gil Toorak Mclachlan and all his corrupt cronies, should be arraigned, for threatening the livelihood of a young man with amazing physical talents by promoting an addictive psychological drug: gambling. That these parasitic hypocrites have the audacity to condemn Stepho for "doing the wrong thing", and "threatening the integrity of the game" is vomit wrenching. I am angry that we did not demand a lesser penalty, and if not, then take them on legally. You would have seen Gil Toorak McLachlan backpeddle in a hurry if we had.

Seriously sick of hearing those say that Stephenson shouldn't have owned up to his mistake. The risk of being caught in the future would have been hanging over him for the rest of his career.

Stephenson got a lesser punishment because he owed up to it in the first place. He's bloody lucky he's even got a chance of returning this year. He didn't bet on one game, he did it several times and seemed oblivious of the fact that he was breaking AFL rules when he ruing over a lost bet after the St Kilda game in the change rooms.

However naive he was, he was thick as a brick in choosing to bet on games involving Collingwood. He was flirting with match fixing when he decided to bet on the final margin of one of our games.

I think he's entitled to a second chance to redeem himself, but he's let down the club badly.

On the other hand, the AFL has a lot to answer for allowing betting companies to have such a stranglehold on the code.

Sorry Jezza. I usually like your posts. But this one is really not one of them. It is the AFL who stand condemned, not Jaidyn Stephenson. 10 games was way too much. ="Bloody lucky" to be able to return??? Absolutely wrong in my opinion. Bloody unlucky that he can't return next week, in my view.

We'll have to respectfully disagree, MTTM.

I amended my post earlier saying the AFL has a lot to answer for allowing betting companies to have such prominence in the sporting code. I can't stand seeing betting advertisements in our face every time the footy is on television so we can agree there.

However, Stephenson needs to take responsibility here for his faults. Unless the club didn't explicitly tell him to not bet on football games which I highly doubt, he should have known betting on football games was off limits. Betting on anything else would have been perfectly fine.

Either way, it's a bad situation because we've lost a talented player who would be one of the first players picked if he was available for selection. The team is poorer for his absence.

Big mistake made with good intent.
Moral: don't ever trust authority in this country.
They will take the "high moral ground" every time and screw you a according to it its own purposes. AFL is classic example.

This is not known to be true (not that it matters much for the rest of your post).

Of course, the AFL claimed that, because they had to.

What we can with great confidence conclude is that if it took them another 4 games to finish their investigation, his penalty would have been 4 games smaller. If they'd finished 4 games earlier, his penalty would have been 4 games greater. It was a negotiated thing to have the suspension end by finals, leaving the AFL and the Club both barely satisified enough that they didn't take the matter further legally. Just like with Heater.
