He would have a shot if he was better than Buckley. He isn't. Not even close.

Its not an insult to finish your career as simply a great champion and one of the greatest ever to play for Collingwood. Peter Daicos has that title as do countless others.

If we were to win, pretty damn special.

1 game to pass W. Richardson for outright third at Collingwood.

23 games to reach 300.

30 games to pass G. Coventry (306) for second place at the club.

37 games to pass T. Shaw (313) for the club record.

7 more Brownlow votes to pass Dane Swan as Collingwoods highest vote getter.

5 more Brownlow votes to enter the top 10 for total votes.

22 more Brownlow votes to pass Leigh Matthews as the highest total vote winner without winning the medal.*

30 more Brownlow votes to enter the top 5 for total votes.**

*(Depending on Joel Selwood)
*(Depending on Joel Selwood and Dangerfield)

Well he's now outright 3rd on the clubs all time playing list.

22 to go to reach 300. Might have to wait until early next season, unless he manages to play just about every single game.

Pendlebury must be in the conversation as our consistently greatest player of all-time.

Wayne Richardson was a wonderful, wonderful player and had the knack of getting his hands on the football more often than most people could dream of (his top 10 disposal games are all in the 40s and his most was 47) but, for all his magnificence, he didn't get 30 disposals in any game after his 201st.

Most of you saw Buckley play. His 228th game saw him receive a Norm Snith Medal but it was a slow injury-spoiled decline (liberally dotted with some great games) from there. In his last 50 games, he had 30 disposals just twice. I appreciate, of course, that 30 is an arbitrary number and one of his most magnificent games in a brilliant career was a 29 disposal 6-goal game against the Brions in game 263. Even so, late Buckley was typically a shadow of peak Buckley.

Tony Shaw had a few more high-disposal games in his last seasons than Buckley and Richardson but his effectiveness did fall away after 1990. In his last four years, he had 518, 406, 252 and 321 disposals.

Gordon Coventry kicked 10 or more goals in at least 10 games over his career and still kicked some big bags of goals in his late years (eg, 15 in his 228th and 14 in his 248th), but he didn't get a bag of 10 in his last 60 games.

Swanny was prolific until close to the end but he was cut down tragically by that awful foot injury after just 258 games when he plainly had more astonishingly good football in him.

Meanwhile, Pendles remains our most important midfielder amongst an array of guns. On Thursday night against Richmond, he owned the second half. It's a team game, of course, and there were plenty of other great contributors - but I do think that people sometimes lose sight of quite how immense an average Pendlebury performance is. He had 30 disposals or more in 8 games last year and did so again in his 279th game (I await the coaches' votes but I will be surprised if it wasn't yet another 10). He is no longer quite at his peak, perhaps (although it is possible that he just has a little more help all around, so that the load is now spread a little more evenly) - but he is still our best player, head and shoulders above anyone in the line-up.

^^^ I suspect most of the greats have a slow injury-spoiled decline into retirement. I think Pendles is still struggling with one or two chronic problems (maybe the back problem he struggled with last year is still not right).

He actually kicked the ball twice to richmond opponents on thursday night!

Yep; still getting over that - and it's been three years. Me; not him...

Finishing on 258 games, you'd think Swan had another season or two in him. Considering it was round 1 as well.

He needed 42 games. If he managed to get 20 games in that season, he could have easily made it to 300 in 2017 or 18.

Game 283 was one to remember. Anzac Medal #3. Absolutely stoked.

What sort of upsets me and has for years is the loss of state of origin footy. Pendles would have played every year for about 10 years and probably at some stage Captained the side. Imagine him playing alongside Dangermouse, Gray,Martin and earlier on Hodge , Ball and Judd. As football fans we have been robbed. Over the journey we would have had other players such as Thomas, Swan, Sidebottom, Grundy (for SA), playing at some stage but Pendles would have been in the first 5 picks every year.

I expect that Pendles will this year pass Swanny as our highest-ever Brownlow vote getter. He started the season 6 behind (Swanny 186, Pendles 180) and it is likely that he will get the 3 for at least the round 2 (Richmond) and round 6 (Essendon) games.

To put that in context, Pendles already has as many career votes as Bob Skilton and more than Nathan Buckley, Keith Greig, Adam Goodes, Kevin Bartlett, Dick Reynolds, Greg Williams and Michael Voss.

If there were any serious question about the relative merit of Pendlebury and Hird as footballers (and there couldn't possibly be, since Hird isn't fit to be in a conversation about all-time greats and Pendlebury is), he already has 55 more Brownlow votes (including 13 more best on grounds) than Hird managed, even before the 2019 votes are counted.

Given that Pendles remains our obvious best player and has received at least 15 Brownlow votes in every one of his past 9 seasons, it is likely on his current form that he will be in the all-time top 10 vote getters after this year's count.

Bit of talk on this subject since his Anzac game.

Jon Anderson said this in todays HS:
Quote:
Buckley still gets my vote, because of his versatility and kicking penetration, but Pendlebury is in the mix of the finest magpies of the past 50 years, alongside Peter Daicos and Len Thomspson. Like Buckley, he rarely misses and has extraordinary consistency.

It's also going to be discussed on tonights Footy Classified.
