Post subject: Greatest magpie's by the numbersReply with quote

Was having dinner with a magpie mate the other night and we were playing a game name the best magpie team based on there playing numbers.
It was a interesting game so I thought I would actually go through the history books and allocate the best player beside each jersey number

1. Harry Collier (honourable mention Phonse Kyne, Des Tuddeman, Wayne Richardson)
2. Tony Francis
3. Peter Lucas (honourable mention Mick Gayfer)
4. Alan Didak (honourable mention Brodie Grundy)
5. Nathan Buckley (honourable mention Nick Maxwell)
6. Peter McKenna (honourable mention Syd Coventry)
7. Gordon Coventry (honourable mention Albert Collier, Adam Treloar)
8. James Clement (honourable mention Harry O)
9. Brian Taylor (honourable mention PHIL Carmen, Ron Kingston)
10. Scott Pendlebury
11. Shane O'Bree
12. Ross Dunne (honourable mention Denis Banks)
13. Dick Lee (honourable mention Taylor Adams, Dale Thomas)
14. Shane Wakelin
15. Ted Potter
16. Albert Pannan
17. Jock McHale (honourable mention Scott Burns, Dayne Beams)
18. Max Richardson (honourable mention Paul Licuria)
19. Graham Wright (honourable mention Jamie Elliott)
20. Chris Tarrant (honourable mention Ron Richards, Ben Reid)
21. Lou Richards
22. Bob Rose. (honourable mention John Greening, Tony Shaw, Ted Rowell, Len Murphy)
23. Anthony Rocca (honourable mention Ray Shaw)
24. Tarkyn Lockyer
25. Bill Picken (honourable mention Josh Fraser)
26. Gavin Brown (honourable mention Ben Johnson)
27. Murray Weideman
28. Len Thompson (Gavin Crosisca)
29. Scott Russell
30. Peter Moore
31. Phil Manassa
32. Travis Cloke
33. David Cloke.
34. Mick McGuane
35. Peter Daicos
36. Dane Swan (honourable mention Sav Rocca, Rene Kink)
42. Darren Millane

Yes I'm aware there are some numbers missing at the end but you couldn't name a best without including Pants

Some absolute legends of the club there and if that was our list for 2018 we would be flag favourite and unlikely to loss a game

The 1 jersey was the hardest to narrow down really could have added a couple more names [/img]

If anyone wants to have a go at this, you can sort this list by guernsey number (second column from the left):

https://afltables.com/afl/stats/alltime/collingwood.html

Which means we could easily add:

37: Athas Hrysoulakis
38: Robert Hyde (honourable mentions Jeremy Howe and Tristen Walker)
39: Heath Shaw (!)
40: Paul Seedsman (honourable mentions Mark Beers and Clinton King)
41: Phil Walsh (honourable mention Sam Dwyer)
43: Derek Shaw
44: Shane Kerrison
45: Jack Frost (honourable mention Matthew Ryan)
46: Mason Cox
47: Mark Fraser
48: Mal Michael
49: Heath Shephard
50: Andrew Smith
and, lest we forget, 60: Terry Keays Wink

And which is (are) our worst-performing number(s)?
37, perhaps?

Good thread. Great discussion.

Honourable mention Leon #1

Barry Price no3. Honourable mention Stan Magro.

Tony Shaw 22.

Id have Banksy before Twiggy. No 12

Phil Carman No. 9. Happy for BT though.

Honourable mention Paul Williams no.10.

Honourable mention Presti 35

Ricky Barham 43.

Id have Licca before Max Richardson too

There seems to be a mistake: Tony Shaw 56 -> 32 -> 22, it seems, but never 21.
And one needs some rules, e.g. whether Shaw has to count as 22, or whether one can cheat and count him as 56.

Id go for which number they played their best in. Therefore Shawy in 22, Thommo in 28 and Carman in 9.

Heater 39? What about Fatui Ataata?

Dont forget Neville Shaw 51.

Great list. Personally, #11 Ken Turner > Shane O'Bree

Len Thompson is an interesting one. Number 28 from 1965 to 1971. In 1972, he was 3 and won the Brownlow. From 1973 to 1977, he was 2, and he was judge best on ground in the 1977 GF draw. (The Norm Smith Medal started being awarded in 1979.) And in 1978 he was 1.

So Taylor Adams gets an honourable mention yet our current club champion, vice captain and Premiership player doesn't?

Someone's still dirty on the Copeland Laughing

Frankie there was 23 players to wear #22 so he wasn't alone missing out in fact many current players wearing a variety of numbers missed out. Those given honourable mentions for #22 all rank more highly in our history IMO. Should we delete greening rose shaw to appease you ? Your welcome to do your own list and add him in he didn't make mine like a few in the #1 jersey again.

Surely Medhurst gets an honorable mention for number 7 I know he only played a couple of years, but he had more Magpie Spirit than many and a great Mullet and was an amazing player.

Here here. No more exciting player when he was on

Numbers don't really interest me so I won't be making a list anytime soon. On the honourable mentions, I'm not sure why you'd put any restrictions on it. If a player deserves an honourable mention then they should be mentioned, regardless of how many wore the same number. You couldn't help having another dig at Steele no matter how veiled an attempt

At 24 I'd have Andrew Ireland over Lockyear.

HB line of Ireland, Picken and Burns, 24, 25, 26.

I'd agree that Rowdy scores the 26 though.

3 is a hard one, lots of good players but I'd give it to Stan the man just for that hit on Jezza.
