I wonder how many other players around the League are shitting themselves cos they’ve done similar.

I can’t help feeling the AFL have missed a chance here. Give Stevo say 5 or 6 weeks and announce that any other player that comes forward now also gets the same. Wipe the slate clean. Then, future transgressions will get some frightening penalty.

I'd reckon it would be a sure bet Wink that there would be other players who have done the same thing as Stevo. Using a mate's account, it would be so easy to escape detection. The only issue would be a leak that could come out later and make the situation so much worse for the player.

Your suggestion is just too sensible for the AFL Nearly!! Plus, as tbaker mentioned above, they would've missed an opportunity to make Collingwood the scapegoat.

I'm sure organised crime has been into footy since there was footy and illegal betting. Since there was legal betting, I'm sure brown paper bags have popped up on many occasions. Don't need to bet to influence the integrity of the game.

But also, don't buy shares in your company based on inside information, don't prescribe for your own family if you're a doctor, don't provide evidence against your own clients if you're a lawyer - all dumb moves.

Doctors are constantly getting gifts from Big Pharma. No one tries to stop it.

OTOH, prescribing for your own family shouldn't be made into such a big deal (if it's something boring you're prescribing, like antibiotics or fungal cream).

Eddie said the same thing. He put it to the AFL when negotiating Stephenson’s penalty too, but they knocked it back. So many other players doing worse, with organised crime involvement. Crime gang influence is nothing new in footy, but it seems more prevalent now and easier to get sucked in — back in the day, most players had to work full time for a living. Today it’s 6 figures in your first year just to train and too much free time, with instant access and exposure thanks to technology.

AFL decision-making people are really incompetent: kids in adults jobs. And don't mention that Gill bloke.

Harsh one handed down on a jockey....

Jockey disqualified for 20 months for betting-related offences

The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board handed down the disqualification on Wednesday after Kelly pleaded guilty to the following four charges:

"In contravention of AR 115(1)(e) on 30 May 2016, Mr Kelly made and/or had an interest in a bet of $25.00 on Shearer which he rode in Race 2 at Hamilton on 30 May 2016.

"In contravention of AR 115(1)(e) on 30 May 2016, Mr Kelly made and/or had an interest in a bet of $25.00 on Gold Spur in Race 2 at Hamilton on 30 May 2016 when he rode Shearer in the same race.

Gold Spur (20/1) won the race, Shearer (12/) ran 2nd

"In contravention of AR 115(1)(e) on 5 June 2016, Mr Kelly made and/or had an interest in a bet of $21.01 on Arribos which he rode in Race 3 at Warrnambool on 5 June 2016.

Arribos (66/1) ran 2nd last (11th)

"In contravention of AR 115(1)(e) on 19 June 2016, Mr Kelly made and/or had an interest in a bet on Shearer of $20.00 which he rode in Race 3 at Hamilton on 19 June 2016."

Shearer (5/1) ran 4th

This article just confirms the first sentence. You seem to think the article contradicts the second sentence.

Is it harsh? He placed a bet on another horse winning - if that's not akin to fixing then I don't know what is...

Is it fixing if you put money on Winx to win if you were racing against her?

"Revelations about the AFL and Racing Victoria joint venture come as football’s governing body is under pressure over its $10 million sports betting sponsorship with Bet Easy.

That deal is set to expire and the AFL is negotiating with other companies about who its wagering partner should be in future.

Bet Easy sources have suggested the company would not be disappointed to lose the sponsorship as it has not been a value-for-money investment the company hoped for."

But... and I know they're not supposed to bet, but please. Anyone who thinks jockeys and trainers don't have bets for a bit of fun, they still leave money for the tooth fairy.

The size of their (offenders) bets, clearly indicates it's for nothing more than a bit of fun. The same reason I bet.

This jockey has earned more money than you, me and wokko will earn in our lives all put together... even with a heap of multi collects Wink
A $20 or $25 bet for these guys is like a 2c spin on a pokie for us.

That Race... he's had $25 on the winner at 20/1, if he had it 'straight out' (Win) he gets $500, and he had $25 on the runner up at 12's... he backed it to win, he lost $25... had it each way he profits about $50... all to place he collects an extra $30.
So, he's outlayed $50, his 'best result' is he's $450 up.

There was no indication there was a betting plunge on any horse.... the $3 favourite ran a distant 2nd last.... do we now question that jockeys behaviour?

The winning Jockey receives $960 in prize money, plus a 'kick' from the owners of around the same... shock, horror... this is an unofficial practice that nobody has declared, since Adam was a boy!

The rider of the 2nd horse gets $270 in prize money and NO kick from the owners.

So, if he wins on the horse in this race, he pockets almost $2k... he comes 2nd he gets $270. Plus his 'huge $450' ($720), he's better off riding the winner! There was little more than a few 100k bet on the race nationwide, it was a nothing in terms of money won and lost.

Jockeys at a meet like that get $150/ride regardless of where the horse comes. They get 10% of the prizemoney. Most races pay prizemoney for the first 10 horses. IE - a struggling jockey still earns $1200 for a race meet, without coming anywhere! Plus their earn at; track work, trials & jump outs.

There's races every day of the week, so it's not hard to work out, a jockey who struggles to ride a rocking horse earns more than most. One who wins a bit, like this bloke does, earn ten times as much.

Blinded by a blur of gaming cash, the AFL loses sight of the game

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/blinded-by-a-blur-of-gaming-cash-the-afl-loses-sight-of-the-game-20190620-p51zj9.html

"Jaidyn Stephenson's decision to lay a bet on a match he was about to play in was, of course, crazy. There wouldn't be a player who didn't know the risks. ...

And yet, the AFL loves gambling. Loves it.

The corporation – let's not call it a league in this context – gets a sling of millions a year from a gambling shop that is its official sponsor.

And the footy gets a big run on the TV because gambling shops pay hundreds of millions of dollars a year to advertise on footy-related shows.

Oh, it's OK. The ads tell everyone, in a garbled addendum, to "gamble responsibly".
...

But it's the slap on the wrist to Hawthorn's captain Ben Stratton that rankles more.
...

Lost in the blur of a billion-dollar gambling addiction and an upside-down system of penalising those who forget what sportsmanship is supposed to be – good lord, 22 weeks for a bet, two weeks for filthy and puerile play – the AFL risks a lot more than losing control of its crowds."

^^^

Shout it from the roof tops.

Hooray. The corrupt afl is showing it's true colors and people are starting to notice. I'm almost certain if we make another granny we are penciled in already for a loss.
