But I am positive that the figure mentioned was $36,000 and he had bet this money on four games, without a win. But then amidst all the subsequent hullaballoo, the figure magically became $36. Can we be expected to believe that he was fined $20,000 and suspended for 10 matches over a paltry $36? Beggers belief. What do you think, posters? Did someone pull some strings? |
No doubt McGuire save his arse with the AFL.
Stevo earns 3 or 4 times more money than I do and I doubt, very much doubt he outlaid a total of $36 over 3 games. Sorry but what bull in today's life of 'in-your-face gambling ad's and mix that with 'plenty of money' you earn, it's hard to accept it was only 3 games and $36 outlay as reported.
It wouldn't surprise me if he was betting every week.
McGuire to the rescue is my guess. _________________ COLLINGW09D |

Honestly, I don't get this total "astonishment" at what Stepho did. It was actually inevitable...if not him, then some other young, brilliant AFL talent. Put yourself in this young man's shoes. He is only 20, yet catapulted into fame and glory due to his incredible physical gifts. He is earning more than his mates could dream of. But he wants acceptance from these same mates, because the drive to have peer group acceptance in young people his age is far stronger than any of the "pillars" of reason that so many here seem to appeal to. Peer acceptance is instinctual: it is the very basis of the survival of the species. Don't you think Stepho had fun and jokes with his peers, making paltry bets on himself to kick 3 goals?? Honestly, I myself think it is funny... and I am no 20 year old adolescent(!!). Jaidyn Stephenson was unable to resist what in fact for many young men his age is irresistable...no matter how many " gambling education programs" the AFL hypocritically organises for them. The AFL rakes in millions of dollars, off the back of the physical brilliance and courage of young men like Stepho, and wants to suck out even more by promoting gambling. These profits are sacrosanct, and even those who generate them, like Stepho will be sacrificed, if that is what it takes to generate even more profits. _________________ Free Julian Assange!!

I didn't pick that up at the time.
Disappointing and maybe the club need to stop "supporting" players who do the wrong thing.
Let them fall on their sword next time.....Next player busted for drugs / gambling gets delisted.
Maybe the players need to learn that "it won't be alright" and that there are actual consequences to f&*king up. |

I wish that could work whatsinaname. But look at Ben Cousins, Chris Mainwearing. Lives destroyed but still players are doing the drugs they did. Hell, even Josh Thomas’s two years didn’t stop Murray. And Murray getting caught still hasn’t stopped some players, I can guarantee a few boys at the club (at every club) are still partying it up. And Stephenson won’t deter other players from betting on afl either.
It’s not just AFL but society in general. “It won’t happen to me” and “I won’t get caught.” I just don’t get it. |

Can you imagine Josh Thomas saying “it almost put me off drugs forever...” |

There was more than a touch of arrogance by Stephenson, thinking he could get away with flouting the rules outlawing players from gambling on the footy. The kid seems a nice bloke, so I hope this experience makes him a bit more humble and brings him down to earth a bit. He's a phenomenal talent, but hopefully this episode helps keep his feet on the ground......except when he resumes flying for marks in September. |

Those guys you mentioned weren't sacked. The clubs cradled them through so what real incentive did they have to change or anyone else for that matter.
Maybe if players knew that these stuff ups cost them their careers, they might not flaunt the rules. |

The club told him not to bet on AFL games let alone a game involving your own team.
The Essendon players, naively, did what their club told them to do.

WTF?? Are you blaming Stepho for our current lack of form? If so, then you have NFI.
And finally, do you think Stepho is simply some kind of robotic pawn who exists only to satisfy your desire to see the Pies win?? _________________ Free Julian Assange!!
