The END of the left? Philosopher explains why Italian election is BAD NEWS for lefties.

"The latest election results in Italy, as well as the fragile coalition in Germany, also demonstrate that the moderate social-democratic left is just gradually flattening."

The Italian centre-right secured 37 percent of the vote while the M5S became the largest single party in the country as it soared over 30 percent.

Mr Zizek added that the rise of populism in Europe was a result of the "left's failures" to present viable plans for the future to voters.

Zizek is a self-avowed Marxist. Nobody hates the democratic Left as much as Marxists. Italy’s Left's in big trouble because Italy is on the front line of uncontrolled immigration, and the Left is (rightly) associated with the policies that countenance it. The rising tide of squalor and cultural dislocation is painfully evident in many Italian cities, and it causes huge resentment in an economy that is suffering badly under the Euro. You don’t have to dislike immigrants to think that unmanaged immigration is a bad thing, but uncontrolled immigration is the one sure way to make racism grow. The Left causes racism because of its destructive racial policies. Zizek would offer more of the same, despite his posturing.

Neither the left or right will die, they both just morph and adjust to the circumstances of the time. The balance between the two, along with basic human WIIFM is what makes democracy work.

Errr... the EU does. Italy is in the Euro. It’s Italian politics that poses probably the greatest single threat to the EU’s existence, over the next 5 years. The only problem with Skids post is that he takes something Slavoj Zizek said seriously. Zizek is a world-class purveyor of post-truth (or is that pre-truth?) piffle, all excavated from the economic archeology of a dead German.

Cheers Skids and thanks for giving me the chance to tell people again that this bizarrely cool neo-Marxist is an intellectual sinkhole. He’s the manager of a bank with no credit.
