I was looking at Maynes history earlier.

He was never a superstar, but a servicable player for Freo.

He played nearly all matches after his second year. He came to Collingwood and played 3 in his first year.

He was not injured. We had heaps of players out and yet, he still played the remainder of the year in the VFL. We needed help and leadership on field. We needed a goal kicker. He was supposed to be all those things.

Fine. We took a crack at a recycled player. That's fine. It's just the length and cost of the contract that hurts. Did we do this just to outbid a rival club? Probably North?

You cant help but feel that it has cost us when chasing other free agents. And the fact it may have upset others in the playing group what he's getting paid. And it also has attracted negative attention with his dad getting involved.

He's 29 and not going to get better than he is now. Needs to kick 20 goals this year to make him somewhat valuable. But will he even play?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. (think Father/sons Kelly and Stewart, think Woowoden/Yooung/Lynch), but what were they thinking getting two "older" players for a team not in a premiership window. Was it to save Buckley by getting eighth spot ?
My guess is that Wells is a good player but we will be lucky to get 12-14 games form him this year.
Mayne is below average and may get 2-3 games this year.

My biggest concern is that we don't have any kids coming through for key positions. Plenty of undersized father/son mids years away from becoming B graders.
Why didn't we bite the bullet, let the underperformers go last year and gamble on KPP's as rookies ?
If it goes pearshape this year we will be 5 years away from being contenders
Why would Lynch/Sloane/McGovern join us if others also offer big bikkies.

Just watching Hodge today for Brisbane. Imagine him running round in our back six, showing Langdon and co how it's done.

Has Mayne shown any kind of leadership? Has he taught the younger players anything? Or is he one of those Gen Y's that crys to daddy cos things are not fair?

It was suggested after he retired and before he was approached by Brisbane.

Watts for a pick around 31 would have been handy too as things are playing out.

Hinesight is apparently not quite so wonderful.

I seem to recall that Wells has a number-of-games trigger clause in his contract, though a quick check hasn't revealed any source.
