Not that one wishes the fellow any harm but I just watched Alex Johnson step sideways under no pressure and do what looked like yet another ACL before quarter time in the Swans’ game against Melbourne. How is it that his knees have exploded in virtually every game he’s ever played, except for the one last week against us?

According to reports they suspect another ACL. This would be his 6th reconstruction.

Hope somehow it's just a medial strain grade 1 or 2 ...
Oh, the article suggests they think PCL (4-6wks).

"Heath's ... torn his medial ligament and a few other little things.

"It's not an ACL which is good, but anywhere between a three- and six-month rehab, I've heard this morning."

Kangaroos could be the key to getting players like Alex Johnson back to full health

Quote:

The long, strong and tough tendons of a kangaroo could be the key to getting athletes like injury-plagued Sydney Swan Alex Johnson back to full health, according to a Bowral orthopaedic surgeon.
...

Currently to repair an ACL, a surgeon may use a hamstring. If it is ruptured again, they make take a hamstring from the other leg, or a patella tendon, causing additional recovering time. Tissue from a friend or a donor is often rejected, while material from a cadaver may be from someone much older than the player.
...

Following testing this year by Bowral orthopaedic surgeon Dr Nick Hartnell, The University of Sydney has partnered with his company and two others to provide $2.4 million for pre-clinical trials. They'll examine the efficacy of kangaroo tendons in knee, ankle and shoulder ligament replacement.
...

Sydney University's Dr Elizabeth Clarke said the pilot test found that the strongest kangaroo tendon from a kangaroo tail or leg was six times stronger than a human.

The macropod's tendons were structurally similar to a human tendon but stronger and longer, and even the weakest roo tendon was two to three times stronger, found Dr Clarke, an expert in injury biomechanics, and leader of the kangaroo tendon-testing project.

Researchers in the USA have been given approval to use tendons from pigs, but these tendons are very short.
...

The Sydney University trial will also test a new synthetic material, strontium-hardystonite-Gahnite (Sr-HT-Gahnite) which dissolves as the bone grows, to screw the tendon to the bone.

Going off the AFL website. Except for Kirby who is listed at indefinite. I just put him as season.

But there's some different numbers there.

Oh c’mon! FFS.

“Fremantle gun Michael Walters is a shock chance to line-up against the Cats in Geelong on Saturday, despite previously being ruled out for the season by coach Ross Lyon.

“Meanwhile, superstar skipper Nat Fyfe is set to be back from his hamstring strain for a potential head-to-head battle with fellow Brownlow medallist Patrick Dangerfield.

“Warhorse ruckman Aaron Sandilands will miss his eighth straight game due to a calf complaint but is expected to be available in round 23 against Collingwood – which could be a farewell game for several veterans.”

“Tom Langdon missed training today ... instead had a scan, suffering toe soreness. Should get up but not 100 per cent ... may need jab.”

Wow.

It's a most unpleasant thought but Richmond must be firming as overwhelming flag flavourites by the week such is the sad state of affairs when it comes to the injury being suffered by it's main competition.

We are all well aware of our own injury list but astonishingly GWS have now surpassed us on the injury ladder with Shaw joining the likes of Patton and Scully gone for the year while Greene has succumbed to yet another hamstring concern.

West Coast have lost two of their most important in Naitanui and Gaff while Kennedy is on the sidelines again.

At Melbourne Hogan is now out for the season and joins Lever. Viney is listed as being 3 weeks away.

Dixon gone most likely ends any hope for Port Adelaide.

Amazingly Richmond don't have a single player listed as being out for the season.

We have 7, it will rise to 8 if Treloar doesn't reappear and it could have been 9 if not for the amazing recovery of Goldsack.

Stuff you Football Gods.

Do not like the sound of farewell game at all...
