Now Mihocek’s sixth run as an emergency. Seems odd if we don’t have any intention of playing him, as suggested above.
Would have been exciting to see someone get a debut, but good to see Daicos get a run nonetheless. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Agree, but he's been given a fair run with not enough output to deny other kids that have been playing well in the 2nds. |
Yes, I accept that. The difficulty, of course, is that Crocker’s competition is mostly not from the kids, at the moment. Last week in the VFL, he played as a high half-forward/wing, similar to the role Mayne is now playing in the seniors. Crocker will probably have that role in the medium term but it won’t be at the expense of another young player. Sier, Daicos and Murphy were the obvious candidates amongst the younger players in last week’s VFL performance. Sier is a contested possession beast and must play as an inside mid. He didn’t get a game this week because they want to play Adams and Greenwood - and perhaps also because they want to see whether he can dominate the contest like that for a couple of weeks in a row. I wanted to see him in the seniors this week but I can see why he wasn’t selected. Murphy has to play as a medium/tall defender. The only spot he could take, at the moment, is Appleby’s. Daicos is getting a chance to play in Wells’ spot. He’s the only Collingwood VFL player who has the skills to do that.
McLarty is the other untried player who is knocking on the door but last week wasn’t his best game, so he’d be coming up on potential, rather than form.
The other thing about selection, more generally, is that we’ve been playing a number of young players and there’s a limit to how many you can bring in at once without losing cohesion on the field. The backline has had 3 new faces, bearing in mind that Scharenberg hasn’t played much senior footy, even though he’s been on the list for 4 years - you want the three of them to be supported by established senior players, so that they can grow into their roles. Crocker and Stephenson have been up forward and Brown had a run in the midfield. At some stage Stephenson will probably need a rest. When he does, he’s not going to be replaced by another untried player because the list isn’t full of untried youngsters who can bring what he brings to a game. The likelihood there is that his special talents would be replaced, briefly, by someone who brings contested ball pressure to lock the ball in the forward 50. It’s obvious who that will be - but I’m not going to name him because the Board will light up with negative comments. |

We were smashed in the contested footy contests against Geelong, which is the reason Callum Brown got dropped. These days you need strong bodied players around the ball, which is the reason Greenwood gets a game against the Bulldogs. Ideally you like to see young players who achieve bog in the VFL get their opportunity to play senior football, but what if Sier comes in for the Bulldogs game and breaks down. Bontempelli and Macrae are left off the leash and destroy us and we lose and jeopardise our chances of making finals. No one is happy then. Buckley has shown himself to be a more conservative coach than Malthouse on team selection. For that you can't blame him because his job depends on greater success than he has been having. Malthouse was a proven coach who could afford to take risks. The bigger the risks you take the higher the payoffs are if they succeed and the bigger the fall is if they don't. That wouldn't have mattered to Malthouse but you need to put yourself into Buckley's shoes who has been under siege since the first day he started coaching.

Well, we don’t really. He’s “under siege”, not us. We can comment on what we think is the desirable, preferable course, without worrying about how things might be perceived if they go awry. That’s the luxury we enjoy as supporters.
If the Pies win and Greenwood plays well, it was arguably a good call. If not, then Sier should have played. That’s the thing about counterfactuals - they’re counterfactual. |

Interesting to revisit this thread two months later – three of the seven players I mentioned have cemented themselves in the side (Sier's recent injury notwithstanding), and McLarty looks like he'll have his debut pretty soon. Interesting that I didn't even think to list Madgen, who might beat him (as well as Murphy and the injured Lynch) to it.
And it's amazing how recently comments about Mihocek not being AFL standard were being made; now it's hard to imagine our 22 without him! _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

You certainly learn a lot about some posters when you bump old threads.
And sometimes you just reinforce what you already knew 😉 |
