Essendon smashed by Richmond tonight. Richmond's utter brutality was part of it, but the main reason was their incredible ability to co-ordinate structure. To always be present at the contested ball, and to always have the ability to cover the defence with numbers. they simply know how to play in sync with each other. It seems to me that synchronisation is what we are in the process of achieving this year. There is no doubt that our improvement this year is due to improvement in our co-ordination of defensive structure, and therefore the ability to force turnovers. I think one main target for improvement is our ability to integrate Mason Cox into our synchronization: to be where he is when he forces the ball to ground, and in general to anticipate how to position ourselves when going forward to him. Improvement here would result in significantly more inside 50 pressure.
I think our defenders are doing really well, and are connecting with the midfield well.
