Ben Brown has been wreaking havoc in Fremantle's defence due to his height. All the more important for Cox to play. I really hope he isn't injured.

If Cox is out, which I think he will be either way, who replaces him?

Wells to return.

Maynard for Appleby?

Not to many changes, though.

Why would Cox be out?

Yeah, if Maynard is fit, he comes in to replace Appleby, simply because Maynard is at this stage a step above Flynn in terms of his drive off half back and aggression. Though Maynard will be on notice to perform, since Flynn is breathing down his neck for this position. Most likely however, Maynard won't be ready, given the glacial progress that our injury recoveries seem to take.

Could have sworn I saw Walters grab for his hamstring and put his hand up with 5 mins to go. I couldn’t see him walking off when the game was over.
Watch this space.

Oh and looks like we got the wrong Langdon 😉. Toms brother Ed, is a very neat footballer.
They also have a genuine tagger, Bailey Banfield. Whoever he goes to, will be in for a very annoying day. He’s best suited to Sidebottom if they are looking for a match up that utilises Banfields strengths.

THE Purple Haze, and Flog Lyon, going down by 36 pts. That is all.

With Cox free to play, let’s ruck him against Sandilands and see how Fyffe goes trying to use his size to charge through Grundy at the centre bounces. Brodie is faster than Greenwood and a better clearance player. That leaves us room to bring in another creative player.

You may be on the money with that one. I understand that it has been discussed & has been very close to occurring over the last couple of weeks.

Yep, he won't be playing.

IN:
Wells, Maynard, Wills.

OUT:
Varcoe, Appleby, Greenwood/Mayne/Adans (take yur pick).

We need a a bigger body in the clearances, no question. Sidey, Thomas, Adams in the center square is too small. JDG made a huge difference when he went in there in the 2nd half.

Maynard for Appleby is a no-brainer. Apples has done well but he needs to be surer by foot. At the moment he's not going to give us the same rebound drive as Maynard would.

Wells for Varcoe is obvious.

Last Friday was the first time this year we failed to reach 100 points in a win. IS this a concern, are our goal options drying out? We've had Thomas, Stephenson, Do Goey (2) kicking bags - but it didn't happen against the Bulldogs although we had about 10 different goal kickers

We need Reid and Cox to snare a couple each.

While the 100 points is a goal, I'd rather win and score <100 than lose scoring >100.

No argument on that, but as we are just hanging by a thread at 8th, with a good percentage, we could be 5th on the ladder.

I am not complaining, I'll take being in the 8 any day, but could be something we should look at given the closeness of the competition

We really should destroy this mob!

They're a bunch of babbling boobies in disarray.

Minimal changes to a winning side.

Wells for Varcoe the obvious one.

Possibly Maynard for Appleby, but wouldn't it be nice to see Wills come in and do a job on Fyfe? Probably lacks the pace to run with him, but would match him at the stoppages...

If I've learnt anything about our game plan this year, this is how this game will go:

Q1: timid start with not much happening until junk time. They get an easy goal from a clean center clearance. Dunn and Langdon give away dumb frees that lead to goals. Shaz takes 4 intercept marks for the quarter and avoids us being 6 goals down. Nicksters claim that we're playing like 2016-17.
Q2: Defence tightens up a bit. WHE kicks his goal, commentators talk about how he' scored every week. A couple of our unsung mid tier players keep us in it. Wells or Pendles creatively finds an I50 target from traffic. Dunn makes a great play play to save a goal. We leak 2 late goals in junk time.
Q3: Minor adjustments by the coaches make our structures look good again. Grundy has tired out their rucks and starts to dominate. Sidey and Treloar miss gettable snaps or running goals, but Thomas nails his. Wells or Reid goes off injured. It doesn't matter, we are in control of general play and win the quarter by 3 goals.
Q4: Phillips just keeps keeping on at full pace, and they don't have anyone with the stamina left to go with him. Cox clunks a few and does enough to keep his spot for another game. Handballs off his set shot which ends as a behind. We score 2 more and then conserve energy, cruising to a 20 point win.

We rely on our defensive setups to prevent goals scored against us. At the start of games opposition sides are running at their hardest against us so that's when they break through our defences and score most of their goals. Also we try to get our match ups right in defence at the start of games which depends on moves from the opposition coach. I think we are more flexible than opposition teams who have more rigid structures of talls and smalls.

So when things settle by about the second quarter we know who our match ups are and the sting is starting to leave the game and the pace of the game is at our level. Therefore we take control of the game knowing we can outwork the opposition moving the ball back to our goal line from anywhere on the ground the opposition has the ball.

That's the theory I believe Buckley is working towards with the sides he is selecting. Of the 4 games we lost Hawthorn and Richmond outworked us and outthought us. The other two as mentioned could have been victories (GWS and Geelong) had luck not gone our way with injuries. Despite two down in the second half in both games, we held our own in the second half.

A few games coming up will determine where we sit with the rest of the teams around us. Melbourne and West Coast have ruckmen to oppose Grundy and move the ball with plenty of precision to marking forwards who know how to kick goals. North Melbourne play a similar game to us but I think our superior mids should give us the edge.
