Coaching staff reflect playing staff

This one could be WAY out there in which case disregard it, and I may have mentioned it before but here goes. Remember this is only a theory, -

It is apparently unanimous that our guys give 110% percent on the field at all times however they seem to be lacking in skills. Which begs the question, What have the following people got in common?
Tony Shaw, Shane Kerrison, Danny Frawley, Mick Gayfer, 'Crackers' Keenan.

Answer: All are either on the current coaching staff or have been recently... and all were red hot goers as players, but not noted for their polished skills with hand and foot. Blokes who would die for their team mates on the field but who you wouldn't want to kick a goal after the siren from 45m out to win the game for you. The above description seems to also apply to many of our current list, your favorite and mine - Jason Wild, being the perfect example of this. Where, I ask you are the skills coaches, to teach the finer points of the game. What about Peter Knights as a marking coach? Brian Taylor for goal kicking etc.... Endeavour and heart will get you a long way, but you still need the skills to finish it all off. Who is filling this obvious void?

I reckon you are on the money. Collingwood doesn't seem to have a specific coaching panel. Many Clubs are using the (heaven forbid) American model of having coaches for specific players e.g. forwards coach. Hawthorn has Dermie as forward coach and longer term this will pay dividends with their young forwards.

Ideally you would think a panel comprising :
Forwards Coach - skills in leading, marking, goal-kicking (basically a goal hungry bugger who can develop all our forwards into madly leading , option creating goal sneaks)
Midfield Coach - centre square strategy, delivery to forwards, coping with taggers, linking options
Ruck Coach - definite specialist - needs to be more current than Crackers - what about a Stynes ?
Backline Coach - ideally a running style backman e.g. Worsfold (excuse the language) - someone who can play tough but not totally negative
I like your idea of a marking coach since this skill across a team makes a huge difference.

This sounds like a lot but not too many more than we have now.

The ressies coach should be the pick of the U/18s coaches with senior aspirations. Anyone know who the better ones going around are ?

Agree with both of you. I would venture to say that we already have specific coaches for specific things ie. kicking , handpassing, etc .

There are 2 things that bug me specifically :

1. Why are all our assistants backmen ?. Even our reserves coach was a full back. It has always been said that attack starts from the back, and backmen have an appreciation of the whole situation, but couldn't we sneek in at least one person with attacking flair ?
i.e. a la Brereton.

2. Why are the assistants all ex Collingwood players ?.
Should'nt we have a couple of assistants who played under a Parkin, or a Wallace ? .
I'm sure that they would bring good ideas with them.
Its important as a coach to protect your back by hiring your ex teammates, also its important to bring the old players back to maintain the team spirit, but I feel that its too one sided. People such a O'Donnell or Thompson should have been considered.


Having said that, I think we are looking much better now that we have injected youth into the team. Win or Loose, at least we will have more experience for the following week. I would rather the opportunity to barrack for a team which is trying to improve rather than a team which is plodding along.

I agree with all three of you guy's, just going back to Mick I think that maybe we could get Tony Morwood as our forward coach and maybe have Daicos and McGuane as our midfield/skills coach. I look at Carlton and see people like Kernahan and Williams at their club. They have keeped top(one of the better forwards in the AFL and a very good midfielder) players on and not hard working players, to help out the young players
