The umpiring was crap we should have got 10 more again

Smile It-s not our fault if the Bombers where playing on the edge and trying everything and hoping they would get away with it. We are just a clean and more skillful side full stop! We still came off second best on the close decisions! Spot on TP! Very Happy

They got a lot of frees in front of goal, and ours in front of goal were from clear holding the ball decisions - can't see how Essendon fans can complain about those. Felt the umpires were trying to even up in the 3rd quarter. The Essendon fans were booing everything - they wanted a ton of soft ones to make up for the legitimate ones we received (ok, we got a few soft ones early, but so did they as the game wore on)

Sheldon and Leonard have done the calculations and the umpiring was only worth 15 points.

The non mark decision for De Goey was the worst decision of the day.

I thought in the first half we should of been penalised 3 or 4 times for holding the ball. We were getting a good go from the umpires until the third quarter and then it evened up. By that time Essendon just wanted free kick revenge. The Mihocek and De Goey marks were mad decisions. I've watched some of the replay and Essendon's tackling was pretty crude at times.

The count was even after half time (I didn't check earlier), so it's not what won us the game.

The touch call on the line and Stephenson's goal being taken away are two contentious ones directly affecting the score that didn't go our way in the first half. Then we have Mihocek marking next to an opponent and the DeGoey non mark in the last.

This is a pretty fair summation. I think the Pies were generally harder at the ball and got looked after accordingly.

We may have got lucky with a couple early, but the Stephenson goal should have been allowed (Hurley was pushed unduly) and the DeGoey mark was clear too and would have been a shot on goal.

If you are first to the ball you tend to get the free kicks...

When the ball was up for grabs we were simply harder at it...

So the drug cheats can go cry me a river.

we might have had the better of the calls early. only just. i càn never abide the call that if the frees are lopsided it must be dodgy umpiring. ess home gamesaand they are desperate for a win to keep their season alive. pleasing to see we kept at it and made their sooky boos irrelevant in yhe end

Come on people.

We had a very good day with the umpiring decisions.

It was lovely and only makes the Essendon tears more delicious.

I missed the opening 15 minutes so can't comment there but think that other than a high hit on Brown that was missed and maybe another HTB against Crisp (though the 360 degree guideline seems well and truly ignored these days) we only had a minor advantage in the umpires' calls. There was a lot of 50/50 stuff that fell our way early but that was reversed in the 2nd half.

Most of the calls we got in the first half we didn't capitalise on anyway. The square-up period cost us multiple goals directly as well as a couple of gettable shots on goal.

We kicked 7 goals to 2 in the last. We won the contested ball by 17 after trailing towards the end of the 2nd quarter.

Our top 3 ball getters (Pendles, Reg and Sidey) got 85 stats, half contested, at over 80% DE between them. Essendon's top 3 (Heppel, Merrett and Smith) got 97 stats, 1/3 contested and at 70% DE.

It wasn't the umpiring that got us over the line

The umpiring was mostly good, with the exception of adjudication governing marks. There seems to have been an edict that you have to hold the ball throughout the entirety of an extended contest before a mark is paid. The rule , however, states that you have to “control” the ball at any point in a marking contest, or touched the ball three times in the course of a marking contest. That was disgracefully ignored many times By AFL umpires In recent games, which is odd given that they want to ease congestion, not promote it.

The Essendon ferals were frothing because they don’t understand that you cannot be penalized for holding the ball unless you fail to dispose of it correctly. Several times in Q1 a Pies player had prior, opp and was tackled, but managed to dispose of it legitimately. All the idiots shrieked as if they had been flayed.
