I put this poll on Facebook, with surprising results so far, so I thought I'd try it here as a comparison.

Cats are responsible for killing small reptiles, birds and native mammals. For every responsible cat owner who de sexes their cat and keeps it indoors, there are 99 who don't. feral and domestic cats are a massive problem. See link below

To eradicate cats means that existing pets must be desexed, any strays caught are destroyed, breeders are closed down and stock all desexed and a bounty put on feral/stray cats.

Those people who desperately desire the company of a cat, could purchase a desexed one from over seas, but other than that, Australia would be cat free.

Yes or no.

Cats are very independent.

Desexed, bell collar. Otherwise impounded and destroyed. Problem solved.

They are serial killers with pretty faces.

Nope. What’s the point of existence without cats?

Having said that, if Australia can relax its quarantine restrictions on capybaras, I might reconsider.

but as long as we have breeding stock and you can buy unsterilised ones, the problem remains

Cats have probably done more environmental damage in Australia than any other introduced species, inc foxes, cane toads and rabbits, other than humans.

I don't get the attraction. I've managed to get by OK without them so far

They're apparently quite tasty.

We own a cat (not my choice, a price I must pay for living with females in the house) and my experience is that if you equip the animal with a bell collar, they’re pretty hopeless at catching things unless the victim is already wounded. They work on speed and surprise. I mean the cat here, not the females in my house. I think.

I don’t disagree with restricting purchases to desexed animals and keeping breeding cats on licensed terms. They are a menace to native wildlife.

A brick would work better than a bell, but regardless you provide another reason I'm glad to remain single.

Are claws important in the context of their killing?

I looked up declawing on the internet and learnt that apparently it's regarded as cruelty and banned in some (many?) countries. The claim is it's more like amputating a digit than just clipping your nails.

Declawing, debarking, tail docking, only $£$%^%%$ humans would do that shit.

How about follow the rules, keep them inside or have a cat run? They eat the occasional bird? Ah well the rules of the jungle. I said to our first poodle one day, dream on, you’ll never catch one, got home to find a warm bird under my pillow! I kid you not! Smart buggers poodles!

Maybe we could desex, declaw, take out the frontal lobe on nasty minded humans, seems fair!

There should certainly be controls in place to keep the population to a reasonable level. I’m not a cat person AT ALL, but I’d never hurt one.

Remember not so long ago you’d see dogs roaming the streets all the time, stricter regulations and fines mean its pretty rare now. Can’t see why it can’t be the same with cats.

If the rules of the jungle apply, then everyone should be happy if a dog kills a cat. And I don't think the cats actually eat the birds. They just kill for the pleasure of killing. Do they eat the mice they catch?

Oh, and it's not occasional, either... Apparently it's literally hundreds of thousands of birds per year in the US.

Perhaps ours is a bit thick. It’s hard to tell with cats, they have such tiny brains. Never own anything with a brain cavity the size of a broad bean.

eat the occasional bird? Try fkn lots.

law of the jungle? doesn't apply with an introduced predator.

This is what they can do. https://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/gut-wrenching-research-shows-cats-threat-to-native-reptiles-20180623-p4zn9p.html
