Appleby may one day be an ok defender and he shows greater consistency than Murray.
However, there is potentially a huge upside to Murray so I am happy to invest time in him.
Murray over Appleby, especially if Goldsack makes it back for the finals. |

On a wet track I'd prefer Appleby, but on a dry MCG Murray is the man. |

Appleby's the consistent and known quantity, Murray's more of a wild card.
So all things being equal, I guess in a game that we're expected to win (eg if we finish 5th and are playing 8th) then Appleby, but in a game we're probably going to lose anyway (eg vs Eagles/Tigers) I'd take a gamble on Murray.
All things are not equal right now though, Murray is fit and has been playing. Appleby has to work back from injury. Playing a loose cannon like Murray is itself a gamble, but it'd be an even bigger gamble to replace Murray with 2 weeks to go. |

They are two very different players and it will come down to team balance.
Now we will be without Shaz and Dunn we will need good, attacking users of the ball. Howe and Maynard have this but are also the best options right now to lock down a forward. We need Murray to get better at this, which he can, as it is his strength.
I think Flynn is more of a run with player and will develop into the Levi Greenwood replacement. He will be the player asked to play def forward, half back, run with def mid etc.
Eventually I dont think they will be competing for the same spot necessarily. _________________ "Even when Im old and gray, I wont be able to play but Ill still love the game"

Murray for me. Appleby puts his team mates under pressure with his errant disposals (and it's often the team mate wearing the turnover, or left to cleanup the mess); Murray just gets himself into trouble...sure, there are exceptions to those generalisations _________________ I find your lack of faith disturbing |

I don't mind either to be Frank (or Bob or Bill).
They are both raw and both are inexperienced
Murray can be devastating both for and against us (mostly for in my view).
Appleby has done some really good things too but the handballs (which he's not on his Pat Malone to stationary players can be diabolical).
It will be interesting to see how they both develop with more preseason work over the journey. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

Prefer Appleby, he's a purer defender.
If all defenders were available, would he have got a game though? Assuming this was our best defence.
