Why does our club have such a hard time winning grand finals?

We seem to lose them in every which way imaginable. By large margins, small margins, as the favourite, as the underdog, with a strong team, with a grunt team, against Vic clubs, against interstate clubs, with adversity or with everything in sync, by heading in with great form or falling in. No matter what the situation going in to the games we continue to lose these things. Even 2010 needed a lucky bounce to save us, we were on the ropes in that game too.

Yesterday we were the favoured team, just beat the reigning premier, had a close to full list (as close as any team can get really), were in form and confident, had home ground and home town advantage, majority crowd support, an 8-day break, a five goal head start in the game and still managed to find a way to lose. What club on the planet can achieve these types of results? If we cannot win with all that going for us when can we ever feel confident in a grand final again?

Why does our club have such a hard time winning grand finals?

Are there things going on inside the four wall of the club during GF week that affects every playing group throughout our history? Are we always over-confident, arrogant, cocky within, or do we just simply not have that ruthless attitude on game day? IDK. Any ideas?

I asked Darren Jolly who played for Melbourne Sydney and Collingwood which jumper was the hardest to get a free kick in ? He said collingwood by a mile .

Would you want to be an umpire who gave collingwood a free kick to win a grand final ? The person would be banished from australia ,\.

Since 2001, nearly all teams that have made multiple Grand Finals have won Multiple flags, but not us:

Haw 4-1 (80%)
Bris 3-1 (75%)
Geel 3-1 (75%)
WC 2-2 (50%)
Syd 2-3 (40%)
Port 1-1 (50%)
Coll 1-4 (20%)*
StK 0-2 (0%)**
---
WB 1-0 (100%)
Rich 1-0 (100%)
Adel 0-1 (0%)

* Draw then W
** Draw then L

We'll never know so don't do your head in thinking about it. If it were the same players who featured in every loss we might have an answer but obviously it's not.

I think that we more often than not play a side that is actually better than us. We probably make more Grand Finals than we should, with great help from our massive support base. It can help make a difference during the h & a but not in a GF.

I felt shattered all last week.
It was i feared another lost gf.
I cannot take it anymore.
It is beyond belief.
Beyond a fair statistical event.
In statistics we would call us an outlier.
One that is not considered.
A blimp, an aberration....one that should not be counted
because it is so outside the norm.
And this is what we are.
But it is the supporters who must bear this cross.
It is no coincidence that we have our roots in Irish catholic tradition.
Where they endure pain and suffering for their religion.
It is where we now endure pain and suffering for our religion thru our tribe the CFC.

Something sadly and eerily similar to another team I follow, in another sport. Italian club Juventus, who are a national giant, the most supported club in Italy and also wear the black and white. In 9 title appearances in European cup - Champions League since 1958, they have won only 2 titles. Tell me that isn't freaky! Shocked

This isn't just a Collingwood phenomenon. Is it a black and white thing Question

If Maynard wasn't wearing a COLL jumper, he would've had the ball...

One of Collingwoods' motto's is 'Us against them', unfortunately umpires fall within the 'them' category when it really counts.

Everyone will have a different take on this but for every grand final we might believe we should have won, I would suggest that were just as many GFs we played in where we really weren’t the best side over that season. However, we would continually show heaps of character and determination just to will ourselves onto a Grannie.

This year was one of those years. We weren’t the best side over the course of the season but we willed ourselves into a GF. In the end, for whatever reason, it proved to be a bridge to far against a very good footy team.
There’s success and there’s ultimate success. By any definition this was a successful year and I’m proud of of their performances.

We are the best at finishing 2nd. Which means we are the worlds best losers.

27 GF losses!!! Or is it 28 now. **** me I’ve lost count.

It’s our brand. We overachieve to get there, and screw it up on the day. We actually find new and inventive ways to lose.

Even when we win we can’t do it normally. We had the best team by far in 2010 and but for a lucky bounce of the ball...

We are haunted. Jinxed. Cursed.

We are Collingwood.
