hi all what does everyone think of the way we kick in after a point has been scored by the opposition I feel we did it well last night in the jlt v freo smart small kick in to the pocket but last quarter in grand final 2018 we were using the wrong option in long bombing it to a contest 50 meters out.

whats everyone thoughts I feel this is an area we need to improve on this year

I'd think most strategies for the new 10m rule won't become evident until Rd 1.

Going short all the time is not the answer. It can tend to box you out to one side only if the opposition cover the switch well. The its it'sok predictable where the next kick goes.

In fact with a 10m head start to run any direction, not sure what a short kick into the pocket achieves. You can gain the same position by running there with the ball.

Players with speed, evasion, and good kicking skills should take the ball. Running that extra 5m-10m and then disposing long, short, switching, will be the go. Also having a good Sheppard may work to gain extra meters and release pressure on the kicker.

Firstly, kick ins are all relative to the scoreboard.

If you are in front, you will more likely take the slow, deliberate or conservative route moving the ball towards your own goal.
If you’re behind on scoreboard, the approach will be more about catch up footy, so the risk taking will increase.
In this case, the defender will more likely look to take advantage of the 10 metre rule and then pump the ball long into wing area of the ground. It’s the fattest part of the ground, so harder for the opposition to defend a bigger space. If the opposition do win the ball back, then at least defenders can reset again because the opposition is effectively two kicks away from hitting the scoreboard ( again )
So many more strategies will revolve around setting up for kick outs that are further up the ground than previous. The good teams will profit and the dud teams will suffer further. It’s survival of the quickest.
