Not sure why they would really need him, after their daring recruiting drive a few seasons back that netted them Nathan Brown and Jake Carlyle.

The biggest money surely would be allocated towards the licensing rights to the "Looney Tunes" theme, which rolls every time these two nufties gather the ball...

With Kelly extending his stay at GWS, all eyes go to Coniglio and Tomlinson. Can GWS keep all three?

Going by team needs;

#1 Priority - Key Defender.
1st Target: Adam Tomlinson (193cm, 25yo)
2nd Target: David Astbury (195cm, 27yo)

Our main priority is finding a key defender. We'll see how Roughead goes and watch Kelly and IQ develop. But I think we still need to find a quality tall back there.

Tomlinson and Astbury are the best ones left in the FA pool.

Roughead has been great so far. I still think we need to find a tall back man. But is it still out #1 priority? Jake Kelly was looking like a serious trade posibility, but he is staring for Adelaide. Astbury, now 28, has played most games but is now injured. I dont think he's been at his best either. Tomlinson has been very goos for GWS and is about to turn 26 in August.

Quote:
#2 Priority - Key Forward.
1st Target: Sam Weideman (196cm, 21 yo) (wont happen)
2nd Target: Hugh Greenwood (190cm, 26 yo)

This will be a difficult task. But until Weid has signed, we have to ask the question. Greenwood not a natural FF and he's injured again, so I really should take him off this list. It's just there isnt another option atm.

I still dont think Weid will become a Pie as we'd have to trade with Melb and we'd have to convince him that he belongs here.

Greenwood no chance. Weide would need to be traded for. He's asking a high price too. Has been in average form.

Quote:
#3 Priority - Best Available.
1st Target: Stephen Coniglio

Gap

2nd Target: Ed Langdon

Gap

3rd Target: Jack Newnes

AKA, midfielders. With Wells and others on the way out, we might just be able to snag someone. Will also need to look to the future with Pendles over 30 now. Coniglio and Newnes are free agents, Langdon would be an easier trade target.

Langdon will now be a very difficult trade. I think he will be back in Victoria, but we wont be able to offer Freo the right pick. Coniglio would be sensational, but would we be able to pay him what he'll get elsewhere? Would need to convince him that flags are more important than money. Newnes is a good player, but I wouldnt think in our plans now.

Quote:
#4 Priority - Back Up Ruck.
Stefan Martin (32), Matthew Kreuzer (29), Todd Goldstein (30), Paddy Ryder (30), Callum Sinclair (29) are all approaching that age. If one were to be let go by his club, we could offer a ruck/coaching role whilst in the window. However, I don't think we'd be too willing to pay big money here, but I think its something we need to address.

Article today on AFL website about available rucks. Some may say that Cox and Roughead are there to back up Grundy and Lynch is developing in the VFL. But I'd still look at an older ruck thats willing to take a backup job, if one exists. Unlikely, but maybe we can snag one in the rookie draft if other clubs pass.

Quote:
Overall:
One of Tomlinson/Astbury should become the clubs new #1 target. After that a quality tall forward, as unlikely as that will be. Then the "best available" in Coniglio.

If we fail to land any of those then we might need to go back to the drawing board, but shouldn't write off the remaining players.

I think a backup ruck could be a good idea, but it'd have to be someone willing to play a lot of VFL and almost take on a coaching role. Finding that ruck shouldn't be a huge priority, but it needs to be looked at.

We are in the window, so attracting players shouldn't be the worry. Finding the salary space may be the issue. We also lack the draft selections to go after any superstar quality players via trade.

I guess that's still about right?

Demons circle Docker as contract talks are put on hold

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-06-26/demons-circle-docker-langdon-as-contract-talks-are-put-on-hold

"While the Dockers have pitched a long-term deal to the 23-year-old, all negotiations have been parked until at least September.

Melbourne is understood to be one of the leading contenders attempting to lure Langdon back home to Victoria next season and add outside speed to its midfield.

Industry sources believe Langdon could command up to $500-550,000 per season on the open market.
...

The Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne are others to have expressed interest in Langdon, while Collingwood is also keeping an eye on his movements."

According to Jon Ralph, the top 12 free agents are:

1. Jamie Elliott
We all know his story. Signing a 1 year deal. We'll see what happens, but if his AFL career continues, you'd think it's with us.

2. Stephen Hill
Hurt again and almost 29.

3. Stephen Coniglio
Surly he is the real #1. GWS think he and Kelly will remain at the club. Personally, would love to see Wells hand him the #3 jersey at seasons end.

4. Adam Tomlinson
Should be a target for us. GWS have a bit of work to do.

5. Sam Day
Interesting. 197 cm KPP. 27 at seasons end and coming back from a serious hip injury. Has also had shoulder problems. Might be worth keeping an eye on.

6. Todd Goldstein
About to turn 31. But we do need to think about backing up Grundy.

7. Brandon Ellis
Doesn't fill an urgent need for us. But he is young enough.

8. Shane Edwards
30 and wont produce another AA season.

9. David Astbury
Fills a need for the club. Of high interest.

10. Nic Naitanui
His knees are just about shot. WCE will be more than happy to keep him around anyway.

11. Brad Sheppard
Cant see him moving on.

12. Tom Liberatore
Essendon had a sniff, will they again? 27 this year. I'd be interested if he didnt ask for huge dollars.

Dont really agree with Ralphs ordering. But there it is.

Ralphies boys are just about all signed up now. I wonder if he'll have a new list?

Like the idea of recruiting for a "needs basis" exemplified by the Jordan Roughead pick 75 get last trade period. As said in other blogs, think we need:

* Forward Crumber: Dan Butler available, picks 40-60 likely
* Key Forward: Mason Wood in the 30's
* Running back pocket: Rory Laird being courted from the Crows carcass
* Key Back Tall: Logan Austin from Saints. Can play would come cheap

Am sure we are working on something

Two things.
1) Salary cap.
2) Resigning our current list within salary cap parameters.

Josh Bruce would be an automatic cult figure at the Pies.
Been a long time since we’ve had a big key power forward.
He’s a gun.

Heard that the Dogs are favourites to obtain Bruce.

Would be a good acquisition if we can sign him.

Yeah, fits a big need for us.

Age 27, 197cm, forward. We need to get involved here.

Would be a trade, but how difficult?

FoxFooty reporting that Tomlinson is very upset that he was dropped for todays Elimination Final. He's played 80 of the Giants past 81 matches. They also suggested that it's expected that he'll be squeezed out of the Giants line up with Kelly and Coniglio staying and Cameron coming off contract next year.

Saints interest in him has dropped and the Demons are the favorite to land him.

I still think Tomlinson fills a need for us too.

Age 26, 193cm, elite running ability, defender who is capable of playing at either end of the ground in the key positions and pinch-hitting in the ruck.
