Yes, the original Lily of Laguna words make one go :
It's de same old tale of a palpatatin' n*****
Ev'ry time, ev'ry time
It's de same old trouble of a c***
Dat wants to be married very soon
(That's in the verse, not the refrain, which is what the Carlton song uses.)
They were already changed to less offensive words by Bing Crosby (well, by others, but Bing recorded the new version) in the 40s:
There used to be a gal named Lily
Lily from Laguna
She met a sailor boy named Willie
And they sailed away on a schooner (To catch a tuna)
Now, all night long and most of the day
You can hear a lucky little laddie say |

Interesting old VFL songs—in 1974 I was at Expo 74 in Spokane and as I came thru the gates I heard what I thought was Demons theme song but same tune—different words

Yep. You're a Grand Old Flag, George M. Cohan (1906).
"The original lyric ... came, as Cohan later explained, from an encounter he had with a Civil War veteran who fought at Gettysburg. ... Cohan noticed the vet held a carefully folded but ragged old flag. The man reportedly then turned to Cohan and said, "She's a grand old rag." Cohan thought it was a great line and originally named his tune "You're a Grand Old Rag." So many groups and individuals objected to calling the flag a "rag," however, that he "gave 'em what they wanted" and switched words, renaming the song "You're a Grand Old Flag."

The Melbourne song, on the other hand, did not require many new words:
You're a grand old flag
You're a high-flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave
You're the emblem of
The land I love
The home of the free and the brave
Ev'ry heart beats true
Under red, white and blue
Where there's never a boast or brag
But should old acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the grand old flag
I like the original "Ev'ry heart beats true Under red, white and blue Where there's never a boast or brag" (changed to "And we sing this song to you" in the Melbourne song). |

That could have been used for Britannica
Or even Footscray _________________ I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right |

Yep -- even now. The Melbourne FC changes didn't include putting the name "Melbourne" or "Demons" in anywhere!
Maybe for Footscray, they could put back the original word "rag" instead of "flag". |
