Post subject: Buckley's weekly interview with Gerard Whateley in 2019Reply with quote

Nathan Buckley back on deck for his weekly SEN radio interview with Gerrard Whateley during the 2019 season.

(This thread is a continuation of the one that ran last season which can be found here: http://www.magpies.net/nick/bb/viewtopic.php?t=83561 )

Topic’s covered this morning include:

Morwell JLT game was a good hit out - but last quarter “was yuk”; Scoreboard glitches confused Darcy Moore.

New 6-6-6 rule will influence outcome of close games - “a good thing”. Lengthy discussion on the various tactical centre bounce options available to coaches.

Runner restrictions - Pies are prepared for it. Would like the capacity to send a message to a player, eg. a player who has “lost himself in rotations”.

JLT pre-season games served their purpose. They feed interest in Supercoach (Bucks has had lots of questions re Quaynor’s prospects). Travelling to Freo for a hot game, then against Carlton helped “hardened us up”.

Being runner-up in 2018 - what’s its influence on 2019? Need to “cleanse emotionally”. Buckley recaps on the Grand Final and insight into the days following the loss. Future will tell if the GF loss “made us or broke us”.

Players will review Carlton game this week, light session on Friday. Will look at players returning from injury. Then a short week next week in prep for Rnd 1; “Looking forward to getting our hands dirty”.

(Will post a link to the audio podcast when it's available - likely later this morning)

Generally its on Wednesday at about 10am, but can vary wildly. It happens when it happens, and sometimes not at all.

Buckley interviewed by Whateley this morning on SEN; topics included:

Buckley’s reaction to the video shown at the AFL’s season launch function of the coaches’ back story to Grand Final day - Buckley: “clearly a West Coast story”; Collingwood’s season achievements were “laid on a bit thick”; Coaches were miked-up during GF for 4 or 5 hours- only tiny bits have been released. Selecting and editing of the audio can create false historical reality. Buckley’s kids reactions were captured after the siren.

What’s special about Rnd 1? - “can be quite messy games”; “dour struggles”; a game that is won by the team that wants to win most. Geelong is a great challenge and Pies “need to be up for the fight” re. mental strength and fatigue. Pre-game prep will be similar to last year.

Looking forward to what? - “taking time to reflect on milestones for individuals” not always shown externally. Return of Moore and Elliot acknowledged internally but not particularly singled out for attention like it is externally.

Beams and his return to the club - Whateley pushing for info on Buckley’s involvement in his recruitment - Buckley was “brought into it later in the year”. “Expect him to come in and play his role”. “He’s shown willingness to fall in to our system.” Potentially “he could find an extra one, two or three percent for us.”

Thursday’s AFL coaches' meeting - Buckley arrived late and walked into “willing conversations” taking place. Meeting needs to happen at a better time to discuss rule changes etc. than a week out from Rnd 1.

Discussion about new rule about runners on the ground and reasons for the change. Buckley mentions that broadcasters had complained that runners were a bad look on TV - “don’t really buy that one”.

Biggest take out of coaches meeting was mental health in the AFL and assessing best practice at each club. “Social media a real issue”. Player criticism by the public is no longer face-to-face (eg. at work, down the pub) but by nameless, faceless social media commentary.

Buckley wants more control of players’ time during the late off-season. Too many camps, conflicting schedules etc. impeding player preparation for Rnd 1.

Bucks on Twitter in relation to the Christchurch killings.

(Note: The first 2 minutes is taken up with Whateley reviewing Jessie Hogan’s behavioral issues at Freo)

Buckley on air first up this morning with Whateley talking (rambling?) mostly about the season opening Rnd 1 games, including:

Buckley’s circumspect views on a few other teams. Says playing day JLT games might not be a good preparation for playing a night Rnd 1 game. Of the four 2018 Prelim teams, three lost in Rnd 1. Buckley: “we use the finishing positions of last year as guides to this year too much”. All teams think their best is good enough to make top 4.

Talking of premiers Eagles loss to Lions, Buckley recounts Pies “shell-shocked” loss to Freo by 70 points in Rnd 1 a few years ago, only to go to Sydney in Rnd 2 and beat the Swans. “Does ask you questions about your preparation, your planning, your people”.

Lesser teams of 2018 “haven’t been sitting on their hands over summer”. They are “hungry” and “itching” to improve.

Was the lowest scoring Rnd 1 since 1965. Buckley says too early to know if it is because of the new rule changes. “We could have easily kicked another six or seven goals if we’d got the last possession right.”

Are coaches “feeling nude” because of the new rule changes. Buckley says the coaches box does not manipulate the outcome of close games. “We did not play well” - Geelong handled last 5 mins better and Collingwood wasted its early chances. “We showed a little bit of rust with our offence”.

Rance’s season ending injury - “terrible thing to see”. Richmond still have good defensive set up and chemistry.

Jamie Elliot return - that first goal and his team mate’s acknowledgment was good to see and a milestone for him, but just the first step in his comeback. Buckley’s comments give the impression that it is still unknown whether Elliot can put together “a sustained block of football”.

Going into Rnd 2 against Tigers the 2018 Prelim game is not too much in consideration. More focus is on trying to redress a poor Rnd 1 result.

(Bit of waffle to start with. You can skip forward to the 4:45 min mark if you want to go directly to the start of Buckley’s comments)

The fans might like to hear from him, but would it be better for the team if he saved his energy instead of doing this? Even just sleeping in, for example.

This morning's interview:

Buckley on the Cox appeal against the charge of intentional rough conduct on Grimes - “We got to the right result” and “the fabric of the game is paramount”. Takes issue with the $3,000 fine. Match Review Officer Michael Christian contributed to the charge by wrongly stating that the Richmond medical report contributed to the finding.

Conversation drifts on to other rule changes and “hard core crackdown” eg. closed fist offences.

Incident in 3rd quarter of Richmond game when Richmond had a 7th defender back.

Rnd 3 Grand Final re-match. The marketing pitch “is good for everyone else, not us”. Buckley reflects that Eagles beat Pies three times last year - “we’ve got to find a solution to the way they play” and “crack the code”.

The folly of trying to pick early season winners - “takes five or six games for the season to settle”.

Pendlebury stepping through opposition in 2nd half against Tigers - “he’s improved as a leader” and can guile his way through play.

Pendlebury’s physical problems last year - he tends to “underestimate [his fitness to play] in the moment”.

Jorden DeGoey/Elliot synergy - “on the whole working really well”; most selfless forward line Buckley has seen. “No question about egos” getting in the way.

Taylor Adams return from injury - got all clear from the doc; will play against Eagles if passes training. “If he’s right to go he’s right to go”.

Interview ends with discussion on Erin Phillips’s achievements in AFLW.

[Note: Skip forward to the 8 minute mark to get to the beginning of the Buckley interview.
However, it’s worth listening to Whateley’s opening monologue, ’The Curious Case of Mason Cox’. Whateley throws Michael Christian under the bus when he asks rhetorically:” Why was the idea of concussion allowed to propagate?”]

Thanks for the summary & link. (But I still wonder whether we'd be better off if Buckley just slept in or something instead of doing this sort of stuff.)

A subdued Nathan Buckley was interviewed first up on the Whateley program this morning. It was by phone as Buckley prepared to conduct the club’s game review of the loss to West Coast with the players.

Topics covered included:

Are West Coast still the best team in the league? - Buckley (somewhat reluctantly) “They performed very well and were able to meet any challenge we threw at them on the evening”

Frustration? Four games against WC in close succession (Rnd 17, two finals in 2018; and last Sat ) much the same but “some aspects we improved on but still fell short”. “We’ve still got a bit of work to do”.

Does Gaff’s performance make the Eagles substantially better?- “I don’t necessarily see individuals as many do. When I look at the best teams in the competition I see how they bind together”. It’s the system not the individual players.

Focus of today’s review - WC consistently “edge out our midfield through stoppage” (by midfield he includes wingers, high HBs and high HFs).

Taylor Adam’s bump might get the attention of the MRO - “I don’t see anything there that we would expect to hear about”.

Prelim finalists of 2018 (except Eagles) are struggling - “A lot can change in an off-season and plenty stays the same”. People’s viewpoints are coloured by expectations and “what confirmation bias you are looking for” and “knee-jerk reactions”. Current sample size of games played is too small to draw longer-term conclusions.

“The competition is marginal and the competition is fierce”and “the wider public are blind” to the efforts that teams put in to improve. “I don’t see too many people down at our pre-season training so I presume that’s pretty consistent with everyone else”.

“Plenty of stories unfolding - there’s plenty yet to be told”.

The Suns surprise again with a win over the Dogs. The Suns “looked organised” and” having a crack”. Also have aerial strength.

6-6-6 penalties - “We can’t tell the difference between accidental and deliberate” breaches. Law-makers need to remove grey areas. Needs to be looked at, but “I’m not going to be doing the AFL’s job for them; we’ve got too many jobs to do here”.

Sliding rule - “Once again, you can’t tell the difference between what’s deliberate and what’s accidental, so it makes it pretty tough to adjudicate”. AFL needs to “prioritise which one’s more important to you - the head contact and potential trauma or the leg contact and potential trauma, because I don’t think you can have both”.

Players will use rule to milk free kicks. “We were in danger of creating a generation of players that were going to lead with the head”.
