Topics covered in this morning’s interview included:

A lighthearted recounting of the bird that was trapped in the coach’s box at the start of Saturday’s game. Buckley: “So many bloke’s were moon-walking away from this bird”. Has been some jocularity in the clubrooms since the incident as well as about Tom Phillips gagging about his Industry Super goal celebration (unexplained). Buckley says the belly laughs aid recovery and “keeps the environment nice and open and loose”.

Whateley asks about the post-game press conference where Buckley unexpectedly spoke of his elation, rather than relief, after the hard-fought win over Carlton. Buckley talks about momentum: “It’s big in a game, its big in a season”.

Treloar’s praise for Patrick Cripps as currently the best player in the AFL. Buckley: “I don’t like the lists [of best players]” but goes into lengthy agreement.

Elliot’s hamstring - “It’s going to be over-perceived”. Should call it something else to avoid the screaming headlines.

Rampe’s goal post climbing incident - Buckley gives his view on the rule and its interpretation by umpires and the AFL, and raises the spectre of court action by clubs against the AFL to overturn losses due to poor umpiring. “Integrity is key”.

Whateley then deftly swings the focus onto Maynard being denied that critical free kick in closing minutes of last year’s grand final. Buckley thinking out loud in his response.

Returning from a brief news break Whateley asks (seemingly off-the-cuff) about Buckley’s views on leadership and the forthcoming Fed. Election. Buckley says he’s “not inspired about our country’s leadership at all”, that he doesn’t vote and pays the fines instead (but will vote this weekend), and that he is “staunchly apolitical”, but concludes by talking about some of the political views he holds (eg. wealth redistribution, inequality).

Buckley up on a Tuesday morning this week.

Interview topics included:

Bolton under pressure at Carlton and Buckley’s similar experiences at Collingwood. Lengthy discussion reflective of Buckley’s darker days coaching at the Pies.

Varcoe’s one week suspension for high contact. Buckley says it's unlikely that Collingwood will appeal. Difficult to challenge and means Varcoe won’t be wearing his indigenous jumper on game day this week. Buckley lays some blame on Saint’s player Ed Phillips for going into a ground-ball-get situation in a hazardous manner.

Daisy Thomas charged for calling a boundary umpire “a f---ing cheat”. Buckley agrees with the rules surrounding umpire abuse by players and asks, “Practically, how does a boundary umpire cheat?”

The glory of the Stephenson’s monster torpedo goal at the weekend. Buckley: “A bit of party time for Stevo”. Goes on to detail his role and contribution to the team, and more generally about how the current generation of young players engage with the footy and acquire foot skills. Says that Sidebottom’s goal-assist kick under pressure was the best kick of the day.

Too many teams, but not enough skill? Buckley compares yesteryear’s game with the modern game and its impact on skill execution. Faster game increases player fatigue, and gives less time to make and execute good decisions. Talks of Pendlebury’s abilities, and Cripps. “I don’t coach skill” says Buckley and explains why and how his players acquire better skills.

Coaching Under 11s. Buckley compares how he learned under his father to modern coaching techniques for kids. “Get the ball in your hands”.

Buckley talks at length about goal kicking being an individual responsibility at Collingwood under coaching of Sanderson. Talks about Cloke’s goal kicking and the damage of too much advice.

Friday night’s game against the Swans. “Looking forward to it. It’s gonna be slippery, it’s gonna be contested, it’s gonna be in tight. A great occasion…” [I assume he was talking about a footy match].

Behavior of tennis players Tomic and Kyrgios. Buckley rejects Whateley’s harsh criticisms and asks: “How many cries for help do you need to see?” “I rile against people that are massively critical about where they’re at”. Says there are also many AFL players who hate the game but play anyway for different reasons. “It’s sad, it really is”.

The modern generation of AFL players and their “sense of entitlement”.

How much parenting is there in coaching? Buckley: “Only two on the board” at home “a lot of spills could happen”. Talks about the philosophy of Liverpool FC’s coach Jurgen Klopp, and “the curse of talent”. Then talks about his personal journey with building a sound work ethic, his father’s criticism of his playing as a kid, and his path to talent acquisition that began at Port Adelaide.

On Brad Scott’s departure from North, Buckley says Rhyce Shaw has handled his first words to the media as interim senior coach very well. “Kudos to Rhyce”. Says broadcasters influence how coaches are perceived by the public. Before two years ago he was only shown in the coaches box as being angry. Since then he has been shown when he is smiling. It’s a false narrative. “I have a healthy cynicism for media in this space… Rhyce is going to find out...”

Is it easier to coach when you’re winning? Buckley: “No...”

The mid-season draft. “I like it”. Opportunity to pluck a country player from nowhere and have him being part of an AFL finals campaign. “I love the romanticism of it.” Cites the example of Brody Mihocek coming to the Pies from the VFL. “Blessed to have him… so meat and potatoes.”

Any chance of new Pies mid-year recruit John Noble playing senior footy this year? “Yes”, will be disappointed if he doesn’t. Buckley talks of Rupert Wills successful game in the seniors at the weekend - took the ruck at a critical juncture in the game when Grundy was briefly on the bench with the blood rule. Highlights that you never know when you will be needed in the AFL side and that you need to be ready to deliver when required. Whole Collingwood squad has this attitude.

Daniel Wells injured in first game back. Buckley recounts his recruitment and injury history. Says he has great belief in himself, tragic injury, but he’ll be back, probably via the VFL, “so much more to come”.

Will DeGoey and Moore return from injury to play Freo? They need to get through training tomorrow. And teasingly says Cox is also a chance.

Six new inductees into the AFL Hall of Fame last night. Buckley attended the event: “The best night in footy” - talks about some of the inductees including Mick Malthouse. Does Buckley have a relationship with Malthouse nowadays? Buckley: “No, I’m one of the bodies beside the road”. Talks of Malthouses’ “rat cunning” and being a “master manipulator”.

Dayne Beams needing hip surgery. Buckley says Beams’ hip was a known existing problem during preseason [!] and was aggravated playing against Port Adelaide. Says he now has an opportunity to get himself right and club will support him as it did with Mayne. In the meantime there are other talented mid-field player options coming up through the VFL. [Whateley weakly fails to ask the obvious follow-up questions: Did Collingwood buy damaged goods in recruiting Beams?. And why didn’t due diligence on Beams’ injury status prior to recruitment identify the hip problem?. He might also have asked how Beams’ feels about a surgeon cutting and scaring several thousand dollars’ worth of tattoos on his leg.]

Pies loss to Freo - “needed luck” to have won that game. Didn’t get it. Didn’t do enough.

Score review stuff-up. “If you’re going have it, you’ve got to do it right”.

Does losing give a different opportunity than winning? Buckley says that if Walters doesn’t kick that final goal there would be a different feeling, but hopefully only slightly. Pies didn’t play well.

Pendlebury’s offer to go down the ice slide on Queen’s Birthday. Buckley OK with it as long as the mechanics of his team obligations on game day are not impeded. Buckley talks about the recent passing of Murray Swinton, the Daniher family, and how Queen’s Birthday and its Fight MMD campaign has now become one of biggest of the several marquee games Collingwood plays every year.

Passing of former Collingwood president Allan McAlister. Buckley knew him when he first joined the Pies. Whateley hunts for inside info on Buckley being poached from Brisbane, but Buckley doesn’t bite.

Adam Goodes’ doco - “Overwhelming”. Buckley speaks about the film and his role in the incident and ends up drifting back to Mick Malthouse. “I’m an enemy of Mick’s...”.
