The free against Phillips was a disgrace, Phillips did not actually take the West Coast players legs from under him, He didn't even actually dive on to the ground. Phillips won the ball the West Coast player came in late and basically fell over him onto Phillips back. It should have been a free to Phillips and that is what Stevo thought, unfortunately he was not looking at the umps call, the free was correct as per what the ump called, but it was just so wrong in the first place.

Just watched bits n pieces of the replay. The 50 paid against Howe was one of the softest ever paid. Ridiculous.

IMO a 50m penalty should only be played for a dangerous or reckless act.
They should reintroduce the 15m penalty for these minor indiscretions.
The resultant goal to Sheed was against the run of play as we were closing in, it changed the game.

[quote="Haff"]Both 50s were technically correct.
1st the umpire clearly pointed it was a WCE free and then ball went to a Collingwood player. They’ve been paying that forever.
2nd Howe stood up after the contest, clearly new the mark had been paid and then put his arm around Ryan. Different to the other non 50s where the contact lingered but was already there when the free was paid.
Both are harsh but in the rules.

Not really no.

1st - that would assume that in all cases where the players are confused, then a fifty is given. This was not the case, not even within this game, and no surprises that when a West Coast player handed the ball the wrong way, it wasn't a problem.
2nd - did Howe move to impede him, or did he run into his arms? It's one thing to actively move in front of a player, totally another to have him run into you.

In both cases the 50 metres were gimme goals.
Neither was merited.

Phillips thought he received the free as he was calling out to Stephenson to retrieve the ball to him.

Terrible decision by the umpires. It makes the game look amateurish.

The problem I have with that is the call... the umpire said "Contact below the knees" and pointed towards WC. In most calls in the game they also said 'West Coast' (or 'Collingwood'). Why not in this case when clearly the players didn't know what was going on? When Pendlebury was questioning the 50, the umpire said "I couldn't have been any clearer" - well actually, yes you could have been clearer if you would have said West Coast ball

Anyway, to the supporters saying the umpires cost us the game, get over it. We lost the game

^ Fully agree. The umpire compounded the situation by not referring to the team, as many umpires do. That on its own should have been sufficient reason to give Phillips the benefit of the doubt and not pay the 50.
