Warning: sentimental post alert!!!
Apparently, there will be some sort of send-off on Friday night for the very courageous Liam Picken and it is rumoured that Billy will be a part of it.
Billy was a huge hero of mine back in my young days, (I used to go to training mainly just to watch him), so I hope there will be some of footage available of the farewell across the channels or the internet. I suspect he will look a fair bit different now though! |

As you can see by my name Billy Picken was my hero as a teenager in the 1970s.
His son's Liam and Marcus both played league football.
All the best for Liam going into the future, given the ongoing health issues he suffers as a result of concussion. _________________ "Go Pies" |

Billy Picken went to Melbourne Boys High School (MBHS) in 1974 where he did his HSC in my HSC year too!
MBHS had the largest HSC (read VCE) in the state. It was a factory for getting into University & had a great footy team. David Parkin & Peter Bedford were teachers at one time at the school when I was there. Some VFL clubs, before the inception of the AFL used Melbourne High School as a school for country kids who were good at Footy. Basically, club officials would entice parents to let their kids come the city & they would be given a supposedly good education at Melbourne High. Not all the players were from the country. Melbourne High HSC also had soldiers completing their schooling (some from Vietnam) in the early 70’s, but that’s another story.
In my time players like: Rene Kink, Allan Edwards, Robbie Flower, Phil Manassa, Shane Fitzsimons, Billy Picken, Brian Wood, Bob Beecroft, one of the Goss brothers of Port Melbourne, Mark Lee of Richmond as well as a variety of VFA types attended. Flower was in my HSC English class. Shy & nice kid. In academic terms he was a good footballer. Much more so for Kink. It was rumoured he’d only passed one or two subjects in form 4 (year 10) but was put up to form 5 (year 11) because of pressure from the club. The friendliest of the lot was Billy Picken. He used to call imaginary races during the library period & was very funny (& good at it). I was lucky enough to make the first 18 & there I was star-struck playing with players who were VFL heroes. I played in the ruck in the ammos but half forward for the school team!! The best of the lot I thought by a margin was Allan Edwards (pre- knee injuries) when having kick to kick during the lunch break. Not all players were allowed to play for the school – depending on how valuable they were to the club at the time etc.
I remember one match in particular when playing for Melbourne High against Scotch College. Kink had kicked 1 goal 11 & “we” hadn’t lost a match in 3 years. We were clawing our way back, the quarter lasted till the exact moment we got in front. I’m sure the umpire cum time-keeper was a Melbourne High Old boy. Needless to say the quarter lasted for 40 minutes. Melbourne High School is now a select entry school based entirely on academic merit. I’ve been told the footy team isn’t much chop but they have wonderful badminton & cricket teams ......but that’s another story. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

Billy Picken was probably our greatest ever finals specialist. He always lifted for the big games. "Look out, here comes Billy" was his call. |

Many thanks for relating all that WPT. Really interesting. A great privilege to be able to say that you played school boy footy with the likes of Robbie Flower and Billy!! I remember Allan Edwards looked for a brief moment like he would achieve great things. Not surprised that Billy was entertaining. He had such a mischievous looking face
I knew that Melbourne Boys High School produced some excellent footballers and that Parkin was involved, but didn't realize it was virtually a football academy. Fascinating history. |

Depends what's meant by being official I just heard Luke Darcy and Eddie talking about it on Triple M during the week. If I got it right, they said it was going to happen, or at least was being planned. |

Hi, not all the players played in the team when I was there: Some players weren't allowed to play by their clubs because they were so valuable such as Roobie Flower, Edwads etc. Brian Wood was a few years older as was Beercroft and Goss and were different years.
Billy was great though: He was quite fast when he was younger either winning or coming second in the 200 meters school sports I recall in1974. Billy was never remembered for his pace! _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

I remember playing in the ammos against MHSOB at their ground in the 1980's. I really smashed one of your guys as he was kicking the ball, it went wide and as it was about to sail over the boundary on the full it hit a tree that was hanging over the ground and bounced back and hit the ground inside the boundary line. We all stopped. After a moment the umpire called play on and we went at it again. |
