^ Similarly, wpt, if you re-watch the first quarter, you will see Gawn deep in defence, helping out May and Lever, whilst Grundy is up at wing half-forward, pressing the ball back in, time after time, for repeat forward 50 entries. The weight of numbers tells. Before Melbourne can actually get the ball out of defence in the first quarter, the game should be over - and but for a couple of uncharacteristic misses from Stevo (the first after a mark 35 metres out, DIF within 9 seconds of the first bounce), it would have been.

That's a surprising stat. Makes me a little suspicious about the accuracy of such stats? I doubt that close attention was paid to such stats when the great Len Thompson was playing?
I wonder if there is a stat that covers the "hitout to advantage" for the same three ruckmen? I think we all know that simply getting the "hitout" is among the least useful stat for actually helping the team win a game of football. Getting the clearance is what counts.

Thanks for these incredible stats- Interesting to note that Peter Moore (1979) and Len Thompson (1972) each had less than 500 hitouts and yet each won the Brownlow Medal in that year.

In 1971, Bobby Rose played 'Jerka' Jenkin in ruck and Thommo was played mostly as a half forward. The following year, Neil Mann took over and played Thommo in the ruck where 'Big Len' dominated with his deft ruck work giving Barry Price and the Richardson brothers an armchair ride.
1972 was the last year that McKenna topped 100 goals for the Pies (an amazing 130 goals- 53 points for the season...)
