Appears regularly to "blaze away" without concentrating at all; even with set shots within 50 which he can reach easily. All players miss but he could and should kick more every week if he took more time and care before kicking.
These are wasted opportunities that we don't need.
Thoughts?

Doesn't matter as long as he has his own mental routine on the specific situation i.e snap or set shot etc

Sadly, goal-kicking accuracy has never been a strength of his. He's going at about 50% accuracy this year. It's a problem for many players but less obvious if they have fewer shots. There was a poll last year of who Nicksters would want to take a set shot to win a game after the siren. The number who voted for JdG despite all evidence made me go Shocked Shocked .

Unfortunately, he’s not alone either. We have to many players who aren’t capitalising on the good work up the ground.
You can’t keep kicking more behinds than goals nearly every week and expect not to pay a price.
The team kicking out from a behind has never had it so good for clearing their defensive zone. Kicking behinds is the equivalent of giving GOOD teams a free hit all the way up to the centre or beyond.
Collectively, we need to start kicking better, full stop. DeGoey is probably our most high profile culprit but he has others around him who need to improve quickly also.

^ The way they will all improve is by passing it to WHE (when he's back in the side). Now, there's the guy you'd pick out of our team to have the shot that the flag depends upon.

Even Elliott, of all players, who's been one of the best at the club and in the league in the past, has two or three times sprayed an easy set shot off the side of his boot that has barely scraped in for a behind. Others are so lacking in confidence they just skip the set shot by playing on.

Yes, WHE is the sensible choice, especially if it's from over the boundary line on either side. He has a history of doing it.

And JT is very reliable for gettable set shots.

He's going ok, 14.8 so far this season (64%).
The last 3 seasons he's kicked 76.38 (66%).

Comparatively, over the last 3 seasons.
Josh Kennedy 120.64 (65%)
Joe Daniher. 75.49 (65%)
Ben Brown. 136.63 (68%)
J. Cameron. 108.68 (61%)

Fake news.

No, it's Josh Thomas (70%)

WHE is with most others (63%)

No, JdG's 14.8 includes everything, including a lot from a metre out.
It was 6.6 from set shots (& may still be).
Even that is not a fine enough distinction. We'd need to see the difficulty of the set shots.

And, from other clubs, Daniher is a terrible set shot.

Everyone's stats include everything, I don't get what you're saying?

You should compare set shots with set shots. Even then, you should take into account difficulty. (e.g. Jordy has literally kicked at least 3 goals this year from a metre out. They weren't set shots, of course, or at least there would have been a man on the mark.)

The OP is about set shots. Jordy's snaps are okay. Well, his snap around the body, curling right to left, is good. His banana, left to right, is not so good.

Give them each the same kick from the same distance and angle and I would take WHE every time. He's a superior kick in every way.

The main limitations are distance. If it's a set shot from outside 50, we'd have to go with someone with a long kick and forget about the accuracy. I'm not sure why so many were struggling with distance against Brisbane. Were the conditions that bad?

And who/how is this assessed?

Just think about how stupid that is for a moment.
