Each side has to have six in side back 50 and like wise the forward 50

Plus each side a player in goal square

Right so we have Mason as our goal square player and if we can get a quik centre break chances of multiple players hanging of him diminished a bit

The kick out, snap goals allowed after the siren, 50m penalty changes, rules are simply ludicrous, unnecessary, and just about bringing this fan to quitting the sport. It reeks of morons wanting to put their dirty fingerprints on the game for no reason.

They fix NOTHING that was ever considered wrong with the game.

But they left the rule that did need changing - the childish ruck nomination rule

I'm pleased with the 6-6-6 starting positions, bloody thankful they didn't extend the goal square as that would have altered the cosmetic of the game forever while the only rule change I'm somewhat concerned over is that I haven't missed the days when players could push there opponent blatantly in the back with both hands and be awarded the mark.

Overlooking incidental contact in the back is a good move but it's a very fine line between a player simply holding his position with his hands and a genuine push in the back and introducing more grey areas that invite an umpires interpretation genuinely only leads to more confusion and frustration for players and fans alike.

The new ruck rule where prior opportunity has been removed could really help our midfielder, Brody Grundy.

I like some of the rules. The ability to play on after a 50 is awarded makes sense. The ruckman nomination is a joke.

The new hands-in-back / push rule is going to lead to endless arguments, no two umpires paying it the same way, and who can blame them?

6 - 6 - 6. Yep. Good move.

Kick-in changes. Yep. Excellent change.

Space to kick out after marking in the defensive square. Yep.

Runners: good move.

Water carriers? WTF? Just ban them completely. They are a blight on the game. If a player is thirsty, he can come to the bench or wait until a quarter break.

Umpire contact. Sure. No worries.

50-metre rules. Absolutely. Great change, long overdue.

Kicking for goal after the siren. WTF does this even mean? It makes no sense at all.

Ruck prior opportunity. Sure, why not?

Overall, pretty good changes with only one weird one and one stupid leads-to-tears one.

Good work, could try harder. B-

Just for you, Mr Emu.

Quote:

6-6-6 starting positions at centre bounces: six players from each team to be inside the 50-metre arcs, four inside the centre square and one each of the wings. Minimum of one player from each team inside the goal square.

Kick-ins: Player no longer needs to kick to himself to play on. Man on the mark to be positioned 10 metres from top of goal square.

Defenders that take a mark or win a free kick within nine metres of their own goal will be given space to dispose of the ball with the player on the mark brought back in line with the top of the goal square.

Runners and water carriers: runners only permitted on after a goal and leave before play recommences and water carriers can't enter play during live play.

Umpire contact: players will be prohibited from setting up behind the field umpire at centre bounces.

50-metre penalty: the player with the football will be able to play on while advancing towards the new mark and if the player who infringes falls behind the player taking the penalty they will not be allowed to man the mark.

Kicking for a goal post-siren: player awarded a mark or free kick once play has ended will now be able to kick across the body using a snap or banana kick. The player must dispose of the football in line with the man on the mark and the goal.

Hands in the back rule: It has been abolished with the player allowed to place his hands on an opponent's back to protect their position in a marking contest but not to push the player in the back.

Prior opportunity in ruck contests: a ruckman who takes possession of the ball from a throw-up or throw-in will not be regarded as having prior opportunity.

(Per The Age.)

I really cannot understand how that still exists rather than a FK if more than one player from a team goes up.

I haven’t watched the video re rule changes, but the kick across/around the body after the siren is interesting. Presumably you have to do it without taking a step to avoid play on being called and no score.
