The Age (Mike Gleeson) article has us as the most miserly defence since 1912

We have an average of 9.7 points kicked against us over our 9 games

In nine games this year a total of 87 points have been kicked in total for all of
the first quarters ——9.76 average per first 30 minutes of every game

Next closest Adelaide 15.44 for their first 30 minutes

Carlton 27.6 every first half hour they play

This might help.

Quote:
Collingwood are the most miserly first-quarter team in more than 50 years and are on pace to become the best defensively we have seen in more than 100 years.

The Magpies jump teams in the first quarter, not so much by starting fast, but by making the opposition start very slowly.

The Magpies have conceded the lowest first-quarter points of any team over the first nine rounds. Not just this year but in more than 100 years.

Great Uncle Jack Shorten (pictured left) was CHB for the second half of 1912 (wearing No. 30) after serving an 18 month suspension as a result of a single punch in the 1910 Grand Final- our single premiership over Carlton

Bill and I share a common Shorten ancestor about 7 generations back.

Back on topic... that’s nice but we’re ‘only’ 4th for PA and 3rd for PF. Which made us a top 4 side but not necessarily premiership material. Geelong have the best defense AND the best offense, so it’s not time to rest on our laurels just yet

I’m happy they’re on top. We don’t need to be and I think their age will come into it towards the back end of the season. Anyway for now at least they are the benchmark (despite repeated assertions to the contrary from the commentary team during our last game)
